40D Grip autofocus

OK, I have read >10 threads and still am not sure I understand the answer. I am considering upgrading to a 40D. I have an XT with grip and use the *button on the grip to autofocus (using custom function). Can I use the * button on the back of the 40D grip to autofocus? Everyone seems to make a big deal out of no dedicated AF-on button on the 40D grips.

There is a custom function that switches the * button and af-on button so the grip will still work fine. It's just the fact that you have both buttons available for shooting horizontal but only one for shooting vertical that is annoying.
