So my wife and i are planning a small trip to san diego for about 4 days at the end of may. I plan on getting a good messenger bag but im not sure what most people do to take their gear on the plane. I have heard most bring it on board as a carry on, but how do you get it through the gates....

Is there anything i should do to keep it safe?

Also, anyone know of some good things to do around there? I am not sure where we are going yet, still planning, but i would like to get some suggestions!

All kinds of things to see and stuff to do here in San Diego. A few places to go would be the Zoo, or Sea World, but it can be pricey. Other places to see would be Coronado (the Hotel Del specifically), downtown San Diego can have some cool sights, the cliffs between Del Mar and La Jolla, the tidepool areas around La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs, Point Loma (Cabrillo Monument and the Point Loma Lighthouse area)... There's plenty more that I can't think of too.

awesome! i think of san diego being a huge place and its the farthest west we have been. I just want try to take some good pictures there. I would like to do the zoo so that maybe one of our things. we're trying to mix both our birthdays anniversaries and valentines day (haha valentines day... i told her i dont celebrate it) into one big weekend event!+

FORGOT to add... Being free from debt- weekend as well

Free from debt - that's reason enough to celebrate. If you want to stay free from too much new debt, there's definitely plenty of places to see in San Diego that either don't cost much money or are free. I hope you enjoy your visit!

:) i will make sure to take lots of pictures! i think i have already been planning to get back into debt lol. I said we have to get a new set of suitcases and a bag for my camera before we go and of course she does want to see all the stuff that are perfect for us tourists.

it will be ok, we should have enough money to cover all those so im not too worried.

Dude.. you HAVE to do the zoo. I had no clue how good our zoo is (The call it World Class) until I started travelling.. and thinking "this is it??" of other zoos. Sea world is okay.. but "missable"

When you determine your hotel location we'll chime in with more.
main areas of San Diego:
*Downtown Which with the airport is essentially waterfront.. Seaport village, Gaslamp Quarter Convention Center
*Coastal (central) Ocean Beach OB is 70's low key, Pacific Beach PB is an eclectic mix of hip and chill, La Jolla is Upscale
*Coastal (North county) is nice as well. Starting with Del Mar (upscale) Solana Beach (chill) and Carlsbad (chill)
*Inland Hotel Circle is ~ 5 minutes from the waterfront. <- next to downtown, this is where most people stay. Balboa park (where the zoo is) is full of architecture and plants to shoot... home of the World's Fair: The 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition
*East county holds many tiny gems; but isn't worth the time if you only have 4 days (where I have lived my entire life)
*Mountains Only an hour away from downtown.. there are some great hikes.. If you're up for it, I recommend spending 1 day here (search for Julian.. the main mountain town) and..
*The desert (Anza Borrego state park). Since you're from Va.. I'm not sure how much desert scenery you've seen. IF it were ME, I'd start EARLY at the desert (Sunrise if you're up for it..) then a hike in the mountains, and end the day @ Sunset near the beach as one of your days...

What;s your lifestyle? I can recommend a ton of places to eat, drink and just hang out to absorb San Diego.. Which tomorrow in the middle of Feb should hit 70* for my hike.

i am pretty sure this is where we plan on staying.... we may do disney land if we can get free tickets for a day but we are still trying to figure things out..

from our schedule, we pretty much have 3 full days to do things.... so we may do disney, resort, zoo.

For scenic pictures, be sure to visit La Jolla Children's Pool and Mount Soledad.
