I am very new with my DRebel and only use it on automatic settings so far. I was happy with this snapshot of my son and am sharing it as my first post here. CC is very welcome... just remember I'm a newbie :)
I've been lurking a bit and have seen some fabulous photos... what a lot of talent here!

He's a cutie! Maybe sharpen it just a little? I'm new to my DRebel as well and I'm pretty much an auto girl too at this point. We'll figure it out! ;)

What a coincidence! I'm totally new to this photography business too, but I've learned a lot in a short time and mostly through this forum!
The picture is a great capture of a sweet boy! Some advice that was given to me to strech out a little was to use "P" mode. Everything is still automatic, but you can tell the camera what AF point to use instead of it picking for you. So what I do a lot is to keep it on the center AF point, put it on the spot that I want to focus, press the shutter half-way, keep it there, move the camera to reframe (without changing the zoom length) and then trip the shutter. It's helped me a lot! You also have to tell it when to activate the flash and use it when you are shooting in shadows to help take out shadows in the subject. Not that my pictures are the best, but I'm getting better much faster now.
Good luck!!! And keep shooting!

Spencer's mom,
nice capture :D
What Polly said ... it looks a bit soft ... to my eyes it seems the focus is on the background. One more reason to go with Deltawebb's great suggestion :D
Best regards,
Andy

Nice shot, very well composed. Get out of Auto mode as fast as you can. It will fall into place for you nicely. 'P' is a good start, because you do have a little more control.
