I don't know the name of this giant flower (Paul A...can you help me?) ...it was about the size of a cantalope and very waxy looking. It was growing in the botanical gardens on the Hilo side of Hawaii.

It's a bromeliad of some sort. There's a huge & confusing variety of these, and I'm no expert, but it might be guzmania conifera, but there's not enough in your image to be sure. Bromeliads are fascinating plants. Pretty much only found in tropics. fcbs.org is a good source for bromeliad information. Be warned, bromeliad fanatics are at least as crazy as canon fanatics, maybe more so. There are people who devote their lives to bromeliads without getting paid for it.
