View Full Version : Battery grip shape... squared?

I went out to see a grip for my future camera; to see if it was worth the price. While it feels more natural holding it portrait-style, I found that the squared shape grip is really awkward. It really makes the feel uncomfy.
Is there a reason for that?
Also, after playing with the 7D plus grip plus 17-55 for about 15 minutes, my hand became a bit tired of holing all the weight. I mean, I'm young and strong but the rig started to feel kinda heavy. Add in my 430ex2 and I would not hold it for very long without being tired. Maybe it's just a question of being used to it.
Comments?

canon grip is like that...i like nikon's and sony's grip better, they're more ergonomic.
try this; 5dmk2 w/ grip, 70-200 IS 2.8 and a 580exII, yes it's heavy but after shooting
for long periods of time it seems like nothing. Also, if you've shot with a 300 2.8 and a 400 2.8 hand held, the weight on what your holding is nothing.
you said you're young, so go work out and the camera weight complaint goes away...

The combo becomes much more manageable and less tiring on the hand if you use a wrist strap, like the Canon E-1. Of course, that only applies when you're holding the camera as you would when shooting in the landscape orientation.

I have a couple of suggestions:
1) Join a gym and work out with the weights
2) Shoot more, like a lot more. It will come naturally after a while.
Your combination isn't as heavy as the 1D MKIII and 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens. It was heavy for me also. My arms ached (60 yr old). But after a few dozen basketball games, it became natural and I forgot all about the weight or being tired. So I guess I worked out by using the equipment and didn't have to go to the gym. :-)

yeah... I've thought of that as well... no grip but a nice hand strap!

that's what I've been doing for the past 7-8 years
I guess it was more due to the fact that coming from a light-as-a-feather Rebel XS, all the weight seemed kinda heavy at first

I wouldn't trade grip ergonomics for camera ergonomics
the only reason I like canon more than nikon is because of the way if feels in my hands and the damn amount of buttons and menus nikon has.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The more you use it, the better it will feel. I shot a basketball tournament - 23 games in three days. I though I was going to die. But it gradually got better and recently I realized the aching and hurt just wasn't apparent any more. I think you would get used to it.

My 30D (most of the time), 5DmkII and 7D are gripless but they all have the E-1 installed. That's how much I find the E-1 to be useful even without the grip.

i just said something bout their grip and canon should make their grip a
bit rounder...like how other manufactures are doing...

I agree, I love my grip, but I do wish it was more ergonomic, it feels kinda funny when you are shooting portrait.

I love my grip I NEVER use my camera without it...I have huge hands so it makes the camera feel better in my hand and more like i have something to handle.
As far as weight that is a feather compared to a gripped 40D with 35-350L, Steel Bracket, 580EX II, TTL Cord, and Pocket Wizard. It may feel heavy at first but you will get used to it.
