1.6 and 1:1?

I don't (yet) own a macro lens - and while genreally I understand the 1.6 crop factor I don't see how this impacts on the 1:1 ratio of macro lenses.
If a 60mm is equiv to 96mm (35mm equiv) and 100mm is equiv to 160mm what happens to the 1:1 on these lenses
Does it mean you still get 1:1 just less of the picture (i.e same image smaller field of view) - could someone please explain (also , if possible 'Why' - trying to understand this intuitively is driving me mad (madder, :) ).

Yes, that's exactly what happens. The "focal length multiplier" is really a crop factor, so you still get 1:1 magnification, just on a smaller image sensor.

Actually should be called "apparent" focal lenght. A 100mm is still a 100mm , no matter what.
