What do you recommend in regards to a filter for a Canon 24-70L? I will be using it just to protect the front element. Thanks Jimmy

Nothing at all or the best you can afford.

B&W mrc or Hoya Super hmc.

I recommend, in regards to a filter for protection on your 24-70L, NO FILTER. I have that lens and ain't about to stick another piece of glass between my 20D and the subject. Use the lens hood that came with your lens.

Ditto. I suggest NO FILTER for protection. The only time I use a filter on any lens is when I need it for some creative purpose.

The hood provided with the 24-70 provides all the protection you will need (assuming you USE the hood all the time) unless you decide to go out to take pictures in a sandstorm or some similar environment. Then you might want to protect the lens with a filter, knowing that you will probably be throwing the filter away.

If you shoot in extreme conditions then you might want to protect your lens(es) with a filter. Then use the best quality (as suggested above) filter(s) you can get. Otherwise i wouldŽnt recommend to use a filter if not really necessary.

Would the quality of the picture really suffer? I have a Hoya UN filter on mine, just in case it was to get scratched or something...but if it matter that much...it is coming off, except for when I use it in extreme conditions...

It has to. It may not be noticeable without doing a 200X blowup and then again it may be noticeable as an 8"X10". But it HAS to make some difference.

It may actually make an improvement with some lenses.

Easy way out when you don't have a proper answer.

Only filter I use is a B + W thin MC UV on my 12-24 because the hood is small and the front element sticks out far. Otherwise I don't use one on any other lens.

My 'proper' answer was the second post. My tongue in cheek answer is the one we are discussing. I prefer to use one myself, because I can be careless. Whether it actually makes a 'real world' difference is more subjective.

If your exhaustive tests prove it makes a difference, I am sure you won't use one. You won't make me less careless and I am sure I won't change your opinion.

You accusing me of having "exhaustive tests"?

I like Florida very much and spent three happy weeks touring around. Perhaps I can come and stay for a few months and we can do some – I'll bring my filter!
