View Full Version : OMG!!! I have really done it this time!

I am a nervous wreck now! Why, i hear you ask?
Well, last week i sent about four images in to the BBC (UK) for our region as they were running a photography competition. The idea is that they choose a theme each month and then at the end of the year the best of each theme will be winners and an overall winner will be chosen from them.
As it is all themed on our City (Nottingham) they will produce a calandar for general sale from the best shots.
Now here's my thing:
Today i get a phone call from the local BBC wanting to do a live interview on the radio as they really like my shots!! OMG, little old me on air talking about photography.
I am so worried because i am a real amateur and i don't know all that much. I don't want to sound like a fool talking outta his behind.
I have only been taking shots for around a year and there are bound to be plenty of pro's tuning in and laughing at my stupid comments!
And to top it all off i have only gone and said 'YES' i will definately do it......what am i going to do.
Help me please.....

Congratulation mate!!!
I saw your pictures and they are brilliant... don't worry about anything. Just be natural, answer truthfully and don't boast either. You will be great...
Cheers,

Congrats, very well done.
I can understand your dilemma.
You're braver than I am.
I might have declined. :o
BTW how about a link to the shots so we can all be impressed. :)

well done - dont worry, be yourself, the interviewer not out to make you look stupid, and you will inspire other people to submit images from all levels

Don't forget to tell them that it's all down to 'L' glass
Very well done. If I can offer any advice, it would be to try and justify why you considered the actual subjects – keeps it topical and interesting to the local audience.

cool pictures, tell them your fee is...£xxx
I find the bbc's 'competition' a little suspect, getting everyone to send in their pictures and then essentially they can use them how ever they want. cleaver way of building up your picture library but after the bbc has you image they can sell it on for profit - but the photographer gets nothing for it. nowt. not a penny. that, I cannot agree with.
but your pictures are nice. I know the place where you took the sport one, I race on the lake next door (and too often it seems!)

Shiato storm,
I understand your point of view but sometimes its not all about the £££
Right now i am very much a learner with ambition to be a pro. And if i can get my shots published, paid or not then i am very much happy to do so. All my published shots so far have gon into a folder that i will turn into a portfolio when i feel ready for pro work. Right now i am not ready for that by a very long way.
The BBC cannot sell my shots. Quote:
"Copyright remains with the photographer but by entering the competition he/she gives permission for the BBC to use the image on it's website in connection with the competition for promotional purposes."
The lake and slalom course are great for action shots, you should take your camera next time you go there. That big rowing lake freaks me out though...i don't know why, i guess it just seems a little eerie to me.
Thanks for all your comments guys, much appriciated

Well done! Just be humble during your interview, don't make outrageous claims, maybe play the "i'm just a guy with a camera who likes to take photos" angle. Or you could use it to promote yourself and drive traffic to your website ;)

Hey, congrats and very nice pictures! I can see why the picked them.
I've had the "pleasure" of doing a lot of interviews and talks and so on and I'd say just relax and talk about what you most enjoy. Let your passion for the subject come through and you can't go wrong.
Good luck!
Jim.

Nice pics and well done.
Part of my day job is media work and I do a lot of radio interviews. Best advice - talk in laymans terms (I remember doing an interview about traffic congestion and when I got home my wife said "who goes to work on a transport infrastructure?" since then I have remembered to say buses when I mean buses and not try to be fancy)
The interviewer will likely know less about the subject than you, unless you are unlucky and are being interviewed by Belmondo or Kenny G!! It is not unusual for them to ask in advance what they should ask you - you can even suggest some questions.
Don't try and get too many points across at once and don't waffle.
Relax and enjoy it. They've invited you on and the last thing they want to do is have a bad interview - they'll want to get a good chat going with you and will want you to enjoy it. They won't be like Jeremy Paxman!!

The journalists/interviewers are used to deal with regular people who are not artists/writers/spokesmen, they understand your nerviousness and if they are professional (and I think they are in BBC :)) they will help you and guide you throught the interview.
Congrats and good luck!

Well guys its over....done and dusted!
I am still here.
It was not really that bad, in fact i quite enjoyed it even though it was not really what i expected.
I was led to believe it was going to be about my photographs but it was really about photography in general. Still it was fun.
I was told that i was going to be on at 11:30 am but there was a guy there doing a slot all about debt management (i am sure many POTN members would like some advice there!) and he was still on at 11:45. don't forget this show ends at 12 noon.
So a part of me is thinking 'oi, hurry up this is my time' but another part is thinking 'Phew, the longer he goes on the less time i will have to be on air!'
Anyway, i got about 5 mins on air which went sooooo fast and he asked about just one of my shots, the one below.
I was desperate to mention POTN and i got as far as mentioning online forums. i thought the presenter would ask me to recommend one but he never did, so sorry guys :-(
Anyway for anyone who is interested you can listen to my radio debut by clicking the link below. It is in MP4 format as this was a smaller size than MP3. It should play fine, i have tested it under Quicktime and Real Player but as i use a Mac not WMP.

Your images are so much better than the competition that it is silly! You do a grand job and have natural talent. So, take most (some) of the advice listed above. Maybe one drink to settle the nerves, then be honest and forthright, get a plug in for yourself, and have a good time.
