97 views and one person asked me where I got my monolights?
I'm posting here looking for some feedback so I can learn what I'm doing good/bad, right/wrong in order to grow as a photographer.
These photos were taken of my own daughter but I'm going to use these in a portfolio so maybe people will hire me to take pics of their babies/kids.
Can anyone offer some feedback?

Sometimes it takes a while for things to get posted on. Some people are busy, some people just don't know what to say.... somtimes I mark something to comment on later because I don't have time at the moment... and sometimes the thread makes it down to the bottom quickly because the board is busy that day and gets missed.
Please don't take it as a negative.. . it's not intentional I'm sure. I often look for posts with zero replies and comment on them.. especially when they make it to page 2 or 3
Anyway... Congratulations on your new baby.. :) the feet shots are done nicely.. some of the other shots seem akward and the baby is not comfortable or relaxed.. i would re-shoot those and adjust the posing some so the baby looks less stressed...
Mom and baby shot is really sweet... I would try to get some light between them and the background so their hair doesn't blend in.....
Always happy to help out.... Happy Day! :)

My wife got all giggly with #5, which means when our daughter is born in the next week or so, I'll have to steal your idea.
I'll give you some credit though... lol

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that she was a bit stressed in some of the shots. She is NOT an easy baby to photograph this way. After cranking the heat in the house to 80F and letting her fall asleep swaddled in a blanket, as soon as skin touches air she wakes up and complains. I will have to add a third light back and right of mom to add separation.

well, it's a tough call on black backgrounds, because in some I just feel there needs to be more BG light. The entire series being black BG makes it feel a bit more ominous, and not light and happy like a newborn should be. I like the mom and baby shot more than the rest. Also watch your crops, like on the first feet picture- you're too tight on the left side, and cut off part of the foot.

Thanks for the heads up on those lights. I've been looking for something cheap to start on and I will probably pick two of them up. :) Are you using an umbrella too?

yes. I am using two umbrellas. shooting through white for main and bouncing off inside of black/white umbrella on fill.

I agree. I need to add a BG light and also the black and white is a bit ominous for a newborn. As for the crop, unfortunately it isn't a crop. I was using a 50mm prime lens and did not want to be more than armslength away from her so I guess I missed. I have some other more "cheerful" pics that I have taken and I will post in a bit.

Here are some that are a bit more colorful. These are much more not posed or "artsy". I don't have much in the way of props/BG's to do posed shots so that is the reason for all the B&W but I'm second guessing that.

I like #3,4 & 7 of your second set. I like #6 but not the selective colouring. These photos seem more relaxed.

you got some really really great shots in that second set. in "bonding with mommy", I'd crop it way, way closer to focus in on mom and baby more. Cut into mom's head, maybe just above the ear, and just below the top hand. Terrific shot, as is "dreaming" and very alert. The bath shot is hilarious, and very expressive. it looks like she is saying' Whattya tryin' to do, drown me???" ha ha. on your first set, watch the lint on the blanket in number 4? Very distracting and can ruin a good shot. Much easier to use a lint brush than to spend time photoshopping it out afterwards. details matter. post more pics. good job.
