This is a shot I took the other night. It's a small harbour at Portencross on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland.

I spent some time trying to get the compostion right but I think I failed miserably.
I won't say why at the minute.

What do you think ?

I think you did a very good job! The composition looks well thought out, although there appear to be too many layers here and it's a bit distracting.. I would first start by croppingg tighter on the bottom, towards the boats to cut off the excess rock at the bottom, close to the bottom 1/4 of the shot. Then depending on how that turned out, maybe cropping a bit off the left vertically.

The shot is really nice as is, it's a great scene I'd go back and try it again with some different lighting. You definitely did not fail, it's a good shot.

It's the mast through the ruins... :(
On a smaller note.. the stern line on the boat to the right goes off the page...
which would be fine.. if it weren't so damn close to being on the page in that curve...

Great scene though.. I like all the components.

Ditto, it does look nice but I would've wanted to frame the ruins with the 2 masts I think.

Cameron,
I still say that had you moved round more to the Left you might have been able to produce something more like this, obviously I can't move to the Left but by moving the boat I can achieve something similar (hope you don't mind me playing with your image).

You don't want to frame the castle between the masts in my opinion - it's what everyone else would do, it's the one option without any creative thought, just working on ROT (rule of thirds) which everyone else does.

If you shoot it again try and think more about angles and lines. :D

David

You also don't have any foreground.

David I don't know what to say.

That is not only an incredible piece of PS work it's now obvious to me what you mean.
I see the triangles and I know what your saying about the cable.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble.

There were two things I didn't like.
1. The mast going through the old castle.
2. The castle is a bit lost in the backgound. ie too small.

Thats why I think I failed, but I live and learn.

... er... left. But that's just a detail.

Seems like the mast ruined the ruins :p

What they said. And, if you could have moved the chain to a better angle, do that, too! Next time, LOOK for a minute before you shoot. It saves a lot of time in PS! ;-)

Also, the red and yellow lines are a bit distracting on the second one.

That's the problem, I did look.
Just no bloody good at looking. :(

I love the light Cameron - I think the "looking" takes practice, but that's how we learn, right?

What David has done is brilliant - that's really helpful, thank you.

Is it somewhere you can go back to easily - it would be very interesting to have another go.

You're right Nicki, practice is the thing.
Also David has done a brilliant job and it has helped a lot.
( Better spare his blushes, don't want to go overboard....if you know what I mean, David. ;-)

Yes I can go back at any time. It's a favourite spot.

Thanks for the kind words Nicki,

Your pun just tide me up in knots, Cameron.

Isn't it sickening how certain friends;) have a gift for things like PS?

You know who's done a brilliant job.
I still stand by my previous comments about the image overall. The light is really soft and I love it.
Ask any non-photographer, and I'll bet they love it too. (What does that say about my photographic ability  )
Regards

Trevor

You know.. I totally suck at this myself...
That's why I shoot birds.. as long as it's near the center and in focus.. I don't have to "LOOK" so hard :)

I think your efforts have really paid off here.. you were trying to do something clever and creative.. and focused an that. So you missed some other details..

Details are easy with practice... in the long run it's the creative part that seperates the technicians from the artists.
