I was outside with my camera on the tripod and all of sudden the wind knocked it over. Luckily I only had my 50 1.8 on not too expensive to replace but not the point. The whole lens broke in two peices. I managed to put it back toegther, thelens still works fine but the autofocus is busted :(

It's a good thing that it was only the 50/1.8. Relatively inexpensive as lenses go, but it still stinks to have one break.

It sounds like you may need to get hold of a more sturdy tripod.

I sure do, the one I have sucks! It's soo tippy, thats the last time this camera will ever be on that tripod.

I just got the autofocus to work again, I took it back apart and put it together... it works ok now.

Having your camera knocked over would definately sober you up, I almost died.

The amazing thing is that the lens broke in two and you put it back together and it still works! Respect to the nifty – it's got a crumple zone!

Thats why I NEVER leave my camera on the tripod and why I keep the strap, albeit very loose - around my neck even if I'm on tripod. Sorry to hear of your accident.

I bet the 50 f1.4 won't work if the same thing happens. :D

The thing that bugs me is I ALWAYS leave me strap on... but I have a sunburn on my neck so it hurts like hell. The only time I take it off and look what happens.

ah well, works fine.. Just took some pictures at my sister's graduation.

Ouch.

Did the lens just click back together? Hehe.
Or do you have some tape holding it. ;)

I'd be very interested in knowing how good the lens still is.
They have a weak spot where they allways break. I tried working on one once but they have small plastic tabs holding the front and rear sections together-these are glued at the factory when they assemble and callibrate the lens.
So when thay are put back together after a major break it's a wonder they line up at all ,but i've heard several owners saying they got theirs working 'perfectly' again.
Interesting

Yikes Mike!!! While it is never good to break a lens, am glad it was the most affordable one. Even gladder you have it working again.

You may wish to consider this strap.

I have one on my G5 and along with a neck strap one on my 20D as well.

I took the lens into the local camera shop, the guy took it apart looked it over and said it was perfectly fine. That was my wake up call be be more careful with my stuff...I'm just happy its still ok.

At least you didn't drop a $700 zoom lens because you forgot to zip up your backpack, like I did. >_< Repairs are going to cost me $181.
