View Full Version : Can't use PS filters on D300 16-bits tiffs

I have a feeling this is trivial and common knowledge...

Anyway, when I convert my D300 images in Canon's software to 8-bit tiffs and then load them into Adobe PS, everything works fine. If I instead convert them into 16-bit tiff, all filters in Adobe PS are greyed out --- not available.

What gives?

Thanks,

only some filters are available for 16-bit images. that also depends on the version of PS you have. in PS CS (version 8 ) sharpening, blurring, noise and some select few other filters are available for 16-bit.

btw, there's generally no point of up converting an 8-bit image into 16-bit.

Thanks, Alex!

I do not even know what version of PS I have. I will check when I come home...

But, in general, I thought the optimal workflow was to convert your RAW images to 16-bit tiffs. Am I wrong? What is the bit depth for D300 anyway? I've heard it's more than 8 but less than 16... Wouldn't that warrant conversion to 16 bit? Am I confused? :-)

If you shoot in raw, then make sure you initially convert to 16-bit tiff. That will give you the most data to work with.

Then do all your colour balancing and only then, reduce to 8-bit. That is the point to add any sharpening or effects you wish to add.

300D's RAW images are actually 12-bits per pixel. when you do your raw conversion, make sure you convert into 16-bits. if you convert into 8-bits at this step, you've already lost some color depth.

the idea is then do as much as you can in 16-bit mode, then do the rest, if needed, in 8 bits.
