They are all very cool, but I love this one. There's a great mood to it.

It's registered to a "Dillon Precision Products." They were using it as a flying SUV. Five adults, four kids, three strollers and a Doberman piled out of it after shutdown... We joked that the strollers were for transporting INFANTry...

Simply an on-camera 580EXII .. Get the flash/ambient balance right and it's amazing what comes out of the camera!

Was the guy flying it named Marty? and did the family that got out have two twin boys?

WOW Jay, these are some really nice work, as usual, but the cockpit shot is way, way off the hook!
And of course the helo shot is also very nice. One could almost make the case for it being a vintage image from Viet Nam. Question thou, why no blur of the rotor?

First one I've seen down here in AZ. Thanks for the feedback.

Dunno... Tried to approach them but they didn't seem very chatty. Guess you can be that way when you move in those circles.

Thanks. I'm really happy with the cockpit shot as well. There is actually some rotor blur but three things conspire against me here:
1) Helo Rotors (especailly Hueys) turn much slower than fixed-wing props so you have to shoot at a really slow shutter speed to get more blade arc.
2) I caught the rotor pointing straight ahead in this frame.
3) Helo was very low to the ground (obviously) so you don't see a rotor arc so much as you're seeing the rotor plane. More or less like catching a fixed-wing prop at 90-degrees. Just looks like a straight line and hard to tell something is spinning.
Awesome shots!
Thanks! :D

Well, wasn't disappointed with Pt II. That cockpit shot was awesome. The Huey was a nice change from the fixed wing and a nice shot. I use products from Dillon Precision and they've always been good to deal with. Sorry to hear that they weren't as gracious on the tarmac.

Thanks! Glad you liked Part II as well.
I'm guessing you and other customers must mean Dillon are doing well. Flying your own Huey kind of leads me to believe that as well.

You, sir, of course, have mastered the art of photographing a/c cockpits. I've tried and and tried and tried and can't quite get it - how do you do it?
Thanks for the pointers!

This one is simply a 580EXII on top of my 5D. Took a couple different trys to get the balance just right but it worked out to be 1/125 @ f/8 ISO 100.
I tried bouncing it off the overhead as well but direct seemed to work best in order to balance with the ambient.
One tool I've found is really handy is just an off-camera cord. Being able to "reach in" with the flash helps get a little more light in tight places when needed.
Thanks for the praise. Much appreciated.

^^^ okay - looks like "flash" would be the answer (not a fan of it but it would make sense in this case of high contrast and tight quarters)...
Would the built-in 20D (or Olympus E-420) be good enough? I happen to have this old, old Canon film Rebel flash from back in the day - would that work on my 20D?

Technically, flash is lowering the contrast ratio between outside and inside so it's an equalizer more than anything else. It's exactly the same principle behind those "fight the sun" portraits done by wedding and senior shooters.
The problem with the built in flashes (I think) is that you can't tweak the power. It's all ETTL all the time so you can't go + or - on the FE compensation.
Your old flash may work (beware of voltage differences) but it would probably be manual only. Not a deal breaker but you'll have to get a handle on how to adjust the flash output completely instead of letting the system take a crack at it and maybe needing minor adjustments.

Nice pics all. Cockpit shot is beautiful! What a magnificent interior! Do you have pics of the aircraft? I am not familiar with the gull wing.

I like the shot of the Huey. It is such an iconic aircraft. The interior of the gull wing is really beautiful and you captured it well. The wood is gorgeous. They don't make them like they used to!

Thanks Bruce!
If I'd been right up in there with a 17-40mm, yeah, I'd be getting out the rocket blower but I was in the next county behind a 300 f/2.8 so .. All Good. ;)
