hello -- i have a tamron 17-35 that i use on my drebel. the filter size is 77mm. i want to get some creative filters and my other lenses are both 67mm.

can 67mm filters be used on the 17-35mm (10mm drop) without vignetting or other problems?

thanx for your help.

you can find out by cutting a 67mm diameter hole in a piece of cardboard and putting it in front of your lens.

my guess is no. with filters, generally go with the ones that'll work with your largest lenses.

you gave me a bright idea....i took a 67mm UV filter and taped in place on top of the 77mm filter and it appears to cause no ill effects.

if i can't find anyone who's actually tried using a 67mm filter on the tamron 17-35 i guess the best thing to do is invest in a step-down ring and try it.

while i agree that it would be better to step-up to 77mm it would be easier the other way around since two of the three lenses are 67mm....if that makes any sense.

but either way shouldn't be too bad.

thanx,

i like it a lot. i hike a lot and it's the first lens that i've used that has given me great landscapes.

if you go to fred miranda you'll see that the tamron 17-35 2.8 is rated about even with the canon 16-35L and 17-40L.

i paid $450 for mine after rebate. there was a new one on ebay for $379 last night which i thought was a steal.

i also own the tamron 28-75. both lens have a build quality much better than canon lenses except the "L" series. and both are smaller and lighter than the comparable canon "L" lenses, tokinas and sigmas.

here's a pic i shot at a red light last night:
