This is why your photos are sometimes dark, white balance is off, and generally suck. Metering is a "best case" situation, the lighting of a given image will always be worse under these lights than the actual metered setting. The 2 image sequence (shot in manual) 1/400, f2.8, ISO3200 shows the first a a full f-stop darker than the second.
The below link is an animated gif of light cycling at the same outdoor soccer match in a football stadium with the same settings.

Wow, its even more dramatic with the big stadium lights! Nice examples.

Yes, this kills me at some racquetball courts. At first I didn't know what was wrong, until I realized it only happened when shooting at a high rame rate that captures the cycling of the lights for comparison sake. They usually have approx. 6-8 sets of fluorescent lights, and when you hammer out 8 frames a second, usually 2 images are slighlty darker or have a yellowish cast as the lights cycle. A pain in the butt in the PP, of otherwise clean shots.

That is THE ABSOLUTE BEST example I have seen demonstrating what can happen with the "cycling" of lights
Well done on a great post

Well thanks! Men's District championship was postponed from last night to today in the afternoon, such a joy to shoot in the sunlight again.
