Can somebody define Macro photography? I'm wondering if there is a more specific definition than just bugs and flowers. My definition would be "extreme close-ups," anybody put a little more light on this?

I teach a macro photogrpahy class - so I have to start with some idea of what we will cover. A typical lens goes down to about 1/8 (actual area covered by the image on a 35mm slide/negative is about 1/8th life size - compared to the subject.) Most macro is from about 1/4 down to 1:1 or even 1:2 (where the image is twice as big as the subject.) In other words - area covered by your pix = about 4" x 6" down to 1/2" x 3/4" Beyond that is another subject, different problems, different equipment usually. Make sense? Macro is about size not subject. Though each subject has its own problems/solutions.
