Garel's '70 Superbird has a stock 440. Something I didn't know is that they only built these on 2 Sundays 'cause they wanted them built RIGHT! This is the car that caused NASCAR to change the rules. ;)

Nice car but what's up with that wing? Someone bring a chainsaw and cut it out. It would look 100 times better without the wing.

OMG crawl back under your rock! The nose and wing were designed to keep the Birds glued to the track at 200+mph

Birds with wings rule!!! Awesome photos!

That "WING" my friend, as well as the special nose piece are part of what make this very rare car a Super Bird. Basically a Road Runner with these add ons, as well as the 440 mag (a few got the Hemi), instead of the standard 383 that most Road Runners got.
This car as is will probably fetch between $40,000 & $80,000 the way it sits. The standard Road Runner will command somewhere between $20,000 & $30,000.
Now are you SURE you'd want to take a chainsaw to it's signature "Wing"?

 Probably THE most important Cars in Nascar racing history and we want to cut it up with a chain saw!

I saw one of these wing cars once... (the Charger) ... just amazing. This one looks pristine! Great shots.

Christ I remember when Road Runners were like 1,500.00 bucks used....

Now what looks stupid is these idiots running around with wings this size on their 4 cylinder Honda!!!

One of the most beautiful cars of all time and one of my personal favorites. Really takes your breath away to see them.

If you look on e-bay these cars will go for over 100k EASY, and not even for numbers matching sometimes! If that one is an original 4v 440 and numbers matching I wouldn't be suprised at all if he got $150,000

Thank's everyone! It is something that I don't see often, even around here.

eccen: Sorry, but you picked the wrong car to pick on! Generally I agree with you & adamsti about Detroit's use of wings, spoilers, fake hood scoops, etc., but NASCAR changed the rules because these cars were just too fast for anyone else to have a hope of ever winning a race!
Welcome to the forum!

cds: "Christ I remember when Road Runners were like 1,500.00 bucks used...." :D:D I've heard of $240,000 for a hemi!! I won't tell you what I sold my '69 Cuda 383 for because it's embarassing, but I had 36 more phone calls after it left the driveway! I should have had an auction!

insomnia: This car has the correct VIN numbers. In fact I saw one guy checking it out.

Bruce: Did you see the answer on the "Mystery car"?

Yes I did, Thanks. The side story about the cruise that "Never Happened" was too funny. ;)

"Numbers Matching" means not only the VIN numbers match the drivetrain & appearance, but also the numbers of the motor itself is the original that came with the car from the factory. If those are correct to it's worth quite a bit more.... but if I owned it I don't think I could bring myself to sell it! Thanks again for sharing the pictures :D

If you'd like to hear a really nasty sounding 440 engine running, go here & click on the sound utility at the bottom, right!

it sounds like it has a bad (and weak) cough
and the lime green car is choking to death :D:D That's caused by the cam. You give up low end smoothness in order to gain power on the high end. The "worse" it sounds at idle, the faster it usually is! how do they get from a to b ? How does 1/4 mile in 8 seconds sound? It certainly would cut down on your time to go marketing, no? ;):D:D

I mean how do they get to where they are on display (today)
can they (are they allowed) on the main highways ?

and I don't mean the problem they could cause as traffic stoppers (sights)

Marie, If you look at the rear of that car, you'll notice it has a license plate, and if the tags are current He can drive that car on all public roads and highways.
Hmm, This could conjur up some interesting scenarios, ie, the guy in a modern sports car catching a glimpse of this in the rear view mirror, and gaining rapidly.

thought maybe the cars were carried in on the back of a bigger vehiclehttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

it was mostly the speed I was wondering about (if they were on the roads)
and the size
would people get mad for various reasons
or just really enjoy looking
and pass by

as is forever carved on William Butler Yeats ( poet) headstone
'horseman, pass by'

it was mostly the speed I was wondering about (if they were on the roads) The speed varies widely depending on what city you're in. On Woodward, where they have turned the annual Dream Cruise weekend into a commercial enterprise, Speed limits are strictly enforced. I didn't bother to go last year.
In another nearby city, the police watch fondly as these guys do burn-outs & even drag at times.

The only one of these cars that I've ever seen on a trailer is Hectors Super Modified ‘30-‘31Ford (sort of) (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=82765)
and there's a good reason for that. (You'd like him!)

This car from last year has had 50,000 miles put on in the last 10 years, which is what it was made for, & is why I like these guys. No "Trailer Queens" in this group!

sounds a bit daft
but I thought it may be the car you meant when you said 'I'd like him'

they have been known to be called 'she's'
so thought maybe this was referring to a 'he'
