I have that combination and have had no problems for the past 6 months (touch wood). The lens is a great entry level "L" series lens that gives spectacular results (when used correctly).
Keep in mind that the problems you see on this board only represent a small percentage of people that have this set-up.

i believe the focus point is trickiest at 70mm@f/4 with DOF
as i got this at f/4
http://www.pbase.com/image/45453972/original
and this at f/10

thx, although they weren't meant to be, just some random test shots to see what the lens will do at mostly 70mm at f/4 and in crummy light, so if i were you, i wouldn't hesitate to get the 70-200 f/4.
i have some shots in the house at 70mm that you'd swear were from a prime lens, but so far any shot from 80mm on out to 200 is perfect.
70mm is were there is (if any) a slight problem, and that has been reported to be easily corrected if sent to canon.
right now, i'm leaving well enough alone.
you'll love this lens indeed.

Great lens on a great camera. Many would rate it as a "best buy." I would also imagine it is a lot of people's first L lens - no one regrets getting an L.

The below was my post on another thread so it's a copy and paste more or less. I don't have the 20D but I'm sure the 70-200f4 should perform the same. It's scary sharp and a best buy in my book...but...
My zoom has problems on my XT and 300D. My 70-200 f4L is dead-on-focus at the longer end...but at the shorter end front focuses. I need to send this back to Canon for the second time.
Check out the below link...I recently shot a body building show for a friend of mine. It was strickly just for fun. All the below shots were handheld from 70+ feet away...I was able to plant my elbow into the arm rest for most of the shots. My XT was set to 1600 ISO and shutter speed was around 1/200 sec or so and f-stop was wide open at f4 of course. The majority of the shots were close to the 200mm end of the zoom. The lens is really sharp wide open but I'm disappointed by the front focus at the shorter end. The first five images are cropped from full length body shots.
