I'm still very new to dSLR, and learning to shoot in manual. I've been practising with wide apertures, these are both shot with the nifty fifty at f/2.0. ISO 100, shutter speed 1/320.

Any thoughts/suggestions to improve this sort of shot appreciated. My main problem was not to overexpose because of the bright sunlight.

#1 Would work better as a vertical composition in my opinion. It is a bit overexposed, with the highlights blown out. The mottled sunlight is not your friend here. Try not to have shade and sun mix on a subject.

#2 Bring it in closer. The point of interest is too small in the image.
