Does anyone out there know of a device that allows you to back up your compact flash cards from your camera to you iPhone whilst out on your travels?
Just think this would be a great product since the size of the iPhones and iPods are getting bigger and bigger.

If there is a device that works with the IPhone I would imagine it would cost about the same as actually buying another CF card. I know there was/is something that can be used with the larger Ipod's.

I can see what you're saying mate, but buying another CF card doesn't help me back up a full CF card. :-)
If I fill up four CF cards whilst on my travels it would be great to back these up to my iPhone/iPod. I wouldn't delete them from the cards until I'm back home with everything backed up multiple times....

Not as far as I have ever seen, but I did just run across this yesterday: LINK (http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/08/zoommediaplus-zoomit-is-the-iphones-long-overdue-sd-card-reade/)

Yeah I saw that this morning too. Also noticed that theres going to be a comera connector for the new iPad too, but thats SD also!......Just got me thinking that maybe CF draws to much on the battery life.

If your plan is backup then I see your point.
I bring a netbook with me when I travel.

Yeah thought about a netbook and a laptop, but seems silly when I already have my iPhone with me and theres more than enough room on there....

When I worked for Ritz a few years ago, we sold both the ZoomIt adapters, as well as these:

Hope this helps...

LOL, Jonathan, it doesn't get very good reviews mate, but thats exactly the kind of thing I'm after.
Now it there is a really good version around, maybe even with a little iPhone App that allows you to see the JPEG from the raw, that my friends, would be dogs do-dahs! :-)

Back in 2002, I used to have an enclosure for a 2.5” IDE hard drive. The enclosure had a built in card reader (8in1) and was meant to back up your memory cards to the internal hard drive with a press of the button. I think it was battery operated, but also had a charger. I can look up the name if anyone is interested.
Nothing to do with the iPod, but may consider it as another solution.

Oooo, but the iPhone doesn't offer a ton of storage, I think the big one is around 30MP which for travel isn't a lot and can you download full sized RAW files from the phone. Now the iPad maybe a better solution. MY MKIII shoots both CF and SD cards at the same time so if I got a the larger iPad and if it could handle RAW images and export them back out later then this would be fantastic. Or if it has iPhoto in it and will take RAW images then it's a no brainer fantastic.
I just did a test shot with my MKIII shooting RAW and downloaded it into iPhoto no problem so this would mean the iPad could make a great travel companion for a photographer, no it's not Lightroom or Aperture but you're just reviewing photos and storing backups on the road and can download the photos back into an SD card once home or possibly straight to your home Mac's iPhoto and then move them over to what ever program you want. It's so easy to do.

I am interested in this question as well. Sometimes I carry a laptop but am not sure I want to on my next long trip. So, I was wondering if anyone knows about putting different directories on a CF card and then specifying which directory the days shots go into. Example: I was thinking about buying some 16 gig cards and putting 4 directories on each one but I don't know if that can be done- I use a 40D.
Years ago I had a portable hard drive with card slots and it was great...of course in 2004 40 megs was a ton of space, now I need at least 500gigs as I shoot RAW. I may have to take the laptop and a portable hard drive but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I would agree, the iPhone storage capacity isnt anymore then most the CF or SD/SDHC cards we use. A better bet would be something like the Sanho Hyperdrives http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11946.html that is one of the the 500GB versions but iirc you can get them in 40, 80, 120, 250, 320 or 500GB capacities (I also believe you can get them without an HDD, so you can install your own 2.5" HDD).

You must not take many pictures if you have enough room on your iPhone to put your photos on? Even if you have the 32GB 3GS that will only store around 900/1000 RAW files with no applications on it. Cheaper to buy a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive for $100.00 and upload your photos to that. Here is a 500GB with 800 Firewire and 2.0 USB for $118.99 and free shipping. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/587675-REG/Western_Digital_WDMT5000TN_500GB_My_Passport_Studi o.html
Take Care,

To be honest I think 1000 photos in a couple of days is a lot and since I'm only shooting with a 40D thats only around 12gig and would fit on my iPhone quite nicely. I would then have 3 four gig cards with the photos on and a back up on my iPhone and I wouldn't have to carry a laptop or extra external hard drive.
I think I will be getting a iPad when they come out, but it would still be good to be able to back up to my phone.
Cheers for the ideas.

Subscribing because I really want to be able to transfer a few jpegs (from SD) onto my iPhone internationally in order to blog post and whatnot.

Dont think sd should be a problem mate as I think apple make an sd reader which plugs into the iPhone/iPad. I've also seen a third party sd reader on the market.

Despite the extra weight; I prefer to use a small notebook computer for downloading my images. I don't do any post processing but, will look over a selection of images. I can see any faults (either mechanical or human) with my images a lot better on a 12" or 14" notebook screen than I can on the minuscule screens of iPods, cell phones or the small backup devices used by many photographers. Seeing any faults, I can interdict them before I blow the entire trip for photography.
I open my images using the software that Canon provided and which I have updated via the Internet. I then copy my images onto a pair of Western Digital, My Passport 500GB external hard drives - duplicating images on each of the hard drives for safety. During travel by air, I carry one of the hard drives in my carry-on and my wife carries the other - again this is a safety factor. These hard-drives are very small in physical size and are no burden to carry.
I have never run out of room on those hard drives during even extended trips. Shooting my 40D camera in RAW, I can store in the area of 38,000 images on a 500GB external hard drive. Even though I am a prolific shooter; I cannot conceive of shooting more than 38,000 images during any one trip.
BTW: I also store the manuals for all of my gear as PDF files on the computer, just in case I want to refer to them sometime during my travels. Additionally, I enjoy surfing the Web or using the Internet for information when I have a decent size screen to read.

Can you link me to one? This one here:

is not compatible with iPhones.
