I want somebody to invent a portable storage device we can use on our Canons!
Here is my thought:
I bought a 20Gig I river i pod deal for my daughter WOW 20 Gig! SO i thought to myself why doesnt somebody hook it up to a camera I wold wear the hard drive on my belt loop and use the cf slot or mc drive as a buffer? the came would be connect to the portable HD.
Doesnt that make sense if your gonna shoot raw? That would leave the camera memory as a buffer and thus would nearly make raw shooting unlimited at 5fps?

that has already been *invented*
you need an adapter from flash to pcmcia (loook in google for hardrive to PDA adapter) and then the hard-drive connector + harddrive. I have two adapters and one of them has a 5 volts power conector to power the hardrive (because the power requirements of the hardrive may pass those that the camera can handle). This has already been done with PDAs and you may buy one out of the self

You will have to cut hole in the CF compartment door as the camera won't operate with the door open.

or fool the door sensor (car door sensor?). I don't have the camera with me and I don't know. But anyway, this maybe a good idea in theory but clunky in practice :o

Canon actually has what you want, but it only works with the XL-2 video camera. It takes firewire input from the camera and records it to the hard drive.

If I or they could make it work for at least the 1 series, I would be there.
So close and yet so far.

For $1000, you can utilize the Canon wireless device to port photos to any computer (within wireless distance).
Wireless device works with 20D, 1DS models.

But not pratical (for me) when traveling on airplanes to carry extra stuff you don't need (like a computer to recieve the data. If I have a computer, I don't need the wireless device when traveling. In the studio on the other hand, that wireless device would be handy or if I kept my laptop in the car and was wandering nearby with my camera. But for me not very practical.
Just my opinion,

I think something like the PD7x (or upcoming PD70x) is most practical.
Buy 2 CF cards. Once you're done filling up one CF card, pop it in here and hit transfer. Runs off of AAs (easy to find anywhere), can pop in whatever sized hard drive you want (and you can also pop it out and upgrade in case of newer, bigger HDDs)

I think you miss the point on buffer memory. The buffer memory is like the L1 & L2 memory on a CPU. This operate at a much higher clock rate then any CF available. This is the memory that will allow you to shoot RAW at 5fps continuesly. By connecting an external hard drive to it will not make the dump any faster. Take for instance if you use a Sandisk Extreme III the fastest CF available and see if that will change the frame rate. Now connect your camera to a USB 2 Port and have the RAW save on the PC HDD and see how long that will take. Much longer I think.

Check out the IBM Thinkpad X24 laptops. You can get a used one with 20 Gig HD, 1GHz CPU & 640meg RAM for about the same price as an iPod photo.
It has a built-in CF slot and measures 8.5" X 11" X 1". You can edit RAW files directly on the laptop, and incorporate it with InDesign.
When I shoot events I always take it with me. On the way home I do rough editing on the bus. By the time I get home a day's work is almost complete.

The $1000 price tag makes it impractical for me! I'll walk to my IPOD (and laptop) and download. The way I see it the IPOD was already bought, so my imagetank cost me $27.00...I'm getting my money's worth. That also goes for the laptop.
