OK I feel kinda stupid asking this question but, I am going to have a laptop on my future shoots to help with the shots so I can see them on a bigger screen to make sure the angles and exposure is coming out right.

So how exactly do I teather my 50D to my Mac laptop? I would assume innitially through the USB cable but what program are the photos displayed in? Do they just come up in like ACDsee or a similar type program?

Recommendations and ideas greatly apreciated!

On a Windows machine you'd install Canon's EOS utility and, as you say, connect with a USB lead. The EOS Utility takes care of downloading from the camera and can even be used to control the camera and fire the shutter. I assume it is the same on a Mac.

For viewing the results you can have EOS Utility link to other viewing software, such as Zoombrowser or DPP. I prefer to use Lightroom, which I have set up to monitor the download folder and go straight to the Loupe View as each image comes down the wires.

I use DSLR remote pro for the tether and use Acdsee as my viewer.(50D/7D) I'm not a mac user, but I think you can use any browser for your viewing option like windows.

Are you using the same OS with the same updates on both computers?

Do you have a webcam on the laptop? Sometimes other image acquisition devices, like scanners or webcams can lock out your camera.

Are you on a Mac or a PC? There have been some issues with EOS utilities and OS 10.5, I'm not sure if they ever got straigtened out.

xp service pk 2Both are SP2? Latest is SP 3. Home? Professional? Basically the same applications loaded on both? Are you using the same USB cable both places? Does the USB port on the laptop work for other devices?

Just last week, I had my Macbook Pro and camera setup to shoot tethered. I found this link to Scott Kelby's blog that tells you how to shoot tethered with LR. He basically adds an extra step in for Nikon users, so ignore those steps. All you need is Canon EOS Utilities which can be found with your Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk.

I forgot to mention that I am running OSX 10.6.2
