Hi,
I'm a newbie. I have decided to buy the Canon 50 f1.8, but am considering another lens. Well my question is, what would the Tamron 28-75mm be mainly used for? I don't know much about lenses and I'd like to learn. Somebody please recommend a new set of lenses for me. My budget is probably less than $200 for now. I'd also like to know what these lenses are used for that is recommended.
Thank you so much. :D :D

The Tamron 28-75/2.8 wil cost more than $200. The price of this lens after rebate is ~$350. I don't know what lens you already have, or what type of photography you are planning to make. If you don't have anything else at this moment (other than the 50/1.8), you need a walk around zoom lens. You can get a kit len (18-55) for $80 or get the sigma 18-125mm for ~$250. Getting a 28-xx mm, you will miss out wide angle shots. If you don't think you will take any wide shots, you can also consider Canon 28-105/3.5-5.6, which costs $220, or a sigma 28-200 for $250

The 50mm F1.8 is used for low light photography, or where you want a very narrow depth of field (ie blurred background). Unfortunately it's cheap for a reason - quite a few people (including myself) have issues with the accuracy of the focus motor, even after calibration by Canon - who told me it was designed for film cameras (not that I see how that matters).
The Tamron 28-75 is the lens I use the most by far. F2.8 makes for nice blurred background, it's great optical quality, and the zoom is very helpful.
My advice is to skip the 50mm F1.8, and wait until you can find the Tamron. An alternative is the Sigma 24-70 F2.8, which is easier to find.

F2.8 makes for nice blurred background, it's great optical quality, and the zoom is very helpful.
Also, at 75mm at about F4.5 (the aperature this baby is super sharp) the background is pretty blurry as well. Depends on how close the subject is. =)
P.S. I love this lense. Hasn't come off my camera.

Get the Tamron if you can find it. I use it for all of my poeple shots in my living room studio. It is a very good lens and a very good value. I bought a Canon 24-70 2.8L and did a side by side comparison and based on those results I sold the Canon! The Tamron is that good.
Happy shooting!

I have both lenses and love them both. My issue with the Tamron is the autofocus is not very accurate in low light, but my 50 is much better at that, although not perfect.
