Okay I am confused. My 1DMKII will tether via the Firewire 1394. But it will not tether with the USB.

While it's connected via USB, it will transfer files and stuff. Just won't tether.

The USB is really for doing direct prints to compatible printers. For all else, including shooting tethered, you should be using the Firewire cable.

so why does the 20D and others get to tether via usb??! that's not fair...

Because we don't have firewire on our 20D's like you do on your 1D!

Because firewire is faster then USB 1 on 1DMKII. 20D uses USB 2.
