I confess, I'm a gear head. I like gear, I enjoy the challenge of post-processing and, most of all, I enjoy the satisfaction of a creating a great capture --- One which invokes any number of feelings via memories, the artistic content, or for no apparent reason at all.
I own what most would say is too much gear. SLRs, G9, HD Vid.......
I now own an iPhone, too.
After ALL of that, I've reached a simple conclusion -- the best camera is the one you happen to have with you when you need it.
The upshot is that the iPhone may well become the 'best' camera I own, because it is always there, always on, and the results can be instantly shared, stored and archived.
I think that the iPhone may be the ultimate "f/8 and be there" gear around.

Unless I'm going to work, I pretty much always carry my 50D around with me in the case. My case is small and easy to get into. The only other cameras I have are a Fujifilm S5200 and the camera on my ~3 year old blackberry curve. My fujifilm is too big to be considered a compact, but it is considerably lighter than my 50D. If I'm choosing which one to just carry around, my 50D has always won. It's worth it to me when I get to the destination and see something amazing I need to shoot or on the way and see something once in a lifetime to shoot. My camera on my blackberry curve is very fuzzy and generally slow enough that I often miss the moment I'm trying to get.
Short story is, my 50D is my camera of choice when I'm going somewhere other than work, because the other two cameras I own would probably miss the moment.

good to hear, I've been contemplating getting one, but wondering if it will be usable to me really or am I just wanting it to be cool. If you knew me you'd know I need things to make me look cool cause I'm not that cool without em ;)

I'm not really a fan of the iPhone camera. I can handhold my 1D2 + 70-200/2.8L non-IS at 1/50 some days but, obviously without knowing what shutter speed the iPhone is choosing, camera shake is inevitable.

I have been a convert to that way of thinking over a while.
It really doesnt matter what you shoot, if you get the shot you want.
