I shot this a week or so ago - because of the monotone nature of the colour image I've converted it to B&W also because I wanted to help highlight the the shapes too as it was the curve of the bridge and the arch that attracted me to the image.

I've now got a dilemma because after I'd finished processing I realise another way I could crop and now I don't know which one I like best, anyone care to help? - Which one works for you?

Regards
David

Both of them are great captures, but I like the first one better.

yeah' nice shots, likewise the first it has more intersecting lines,

I think I prefer the first, David.

There are more interesting lines and shapes going on in this one.
The curves of the arch, bridge and also the Gateshead Music center work well. ( not to mention the curved triangle of the sky, reminds me of spherical trig from my navy days  )
I think the vertical lines of the arch, to the right, balance the vertical lines of the bridge.

The B&W conversion is a must for the reason you gave and I think there's a lot going on in the section below the bridge therfore colour would have made it look too busy.

Best regards, M

I like the second best, simple form and shape, the second for me is to busy, the dark area to the right splits the photo into two, so second for me :-)

Never one to go against popular opinion, David, I too prefer the first. The framing draws my eye in towards the bridge structure without being distracting. I find the arch in the second a little obtrusive.

Spot on with the B&W as Cameron said, the image is much better for it. :D

Another good job

Thanks everyone for your input - I see "popular opinion" has it as the first image.

Well as much as I like the first, I'm afraid that I have to agree with Martin and for exactly his reasons of Form and Shape and the more "clean-cut" the second image has about it.

What tends to happen when I view the first is that my eye travels directly to the bridge and by-passes the dark area - which tends to suggest that the area is not
necessary in the image... Hence the reason for cropping it out.

I suppose it's all very subjective with lots of personal taste in the end!

Going against the flow here, but I prefer the 2nd one!

I love the contrast between the simplicity of the arch and the "busyness" {sorry not the right word but I guess you'll know what I mean!} of the RHS of the picture.

Brilliant in B&W too - I think it is very effective for this shot, emphasises the shapes.

I prefer the second one as well. It's very simple and elegant - suits my tastes quite well. That's a photo that would be hanging on my wall in my apartment. :)
