Good ol' UCSD. I practically grew up there. My mom worked in the visual arts department (after graduating from that same department) and I used to spend my school vacations wandering the campus from end to end. Great school. Nice pictures.

Striff,
Hope these comments help, While you do have some good color here these shots are lacking in peak action.
Wit that said it is a long season and things are just getting started so I hope to see more from you as the season progresses. There are others here that shoot more baseball than me and they may be able to add more.
Really good sports photos have faces, the ball.puck, ect in them and are cropped tight with straight horizons. Upload to about 700 on the long side when you post. Use standard crop ratios.
Shoot tight and crop tighter.
Your best shot here IMHO is #2 "IF" it was cropped correctly. It is still a very stock shot of which I have many myself but the timming is great.
1) To much going on here and has no clear subject.
2) I allready talked about above.
3) Butts,backs and elbows.
4) More B,Band Elbows. Cut off limbs.
5) No ball, no action.
6) Cropped a little tighter it may be useable.
7) B,B,Elbows. You need to be farther down the base line on this one.
8) I see what your going for here (with the dust) but .These can sometimes work if you have field access durring warm ups howerver they are warm ups and you will normally be lacking a batter and an ump and its totaly obvious its a warm up shot.
These comments are ment to help, not discourage. Thanks for posting these.
I look forward to seeing more.

I'm sorry but sports photography doesn't need to be about shoot tight and crop tighter all the time. I love good sports photos, great sports photos, but some of these are very nice shots just showing the general scene. The photographic qualities of these photos are what make them. The DOF and simplicity of the shots are a nice change every so often and the OP has done it well.
Well done OP. Some of the shots are very nice but yes, a couple aren't up to the caliber of the others. Number one would be a brilliant shot without that little bloke in the middle but it's still good if you just work around him and look at the quality of the image. Your perspective and angles for 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8 are very nice. Keep up the good work.

Jeff's comments are right on, photos are way too loose. #2 would be the best if it was cropped portrait and just the pitcher.

I'm just jealous that someone is able to shoot baseball already. I'm still AT LEAST 60 days away from being able to do that here in Iowa. By the time our snow melts and everything dries out it may be June if we get any more :-)

I agree with Jeff. I shot the same as you did when I got in to sports. Then I remembered the most important rule of photography: Photograph your subject not the surroundings. What was the reason for the photo? Was was the story? Your photo should tell the story without words or with very few. Keep it up. I get to shoot my first high school baseball game on Thursday. I can't wait.

Thanks Sled! right on point Jeff...we learn more from critique than "good job"., but one must take into account that not all photographers here are trying to publish or sell their pictures and are merely sharing their work with others as a form of conversation.
