Sat on the rear ramp of another Herc. All very cold and exciting. I HAD this aircraft for around 30 minutes and we took some very interesting shots!!
Used a 1D mkII & 24-70 2.8L with a shutter of around 1/60th

Thought so :)
We see Hercs over our house and area quite a bit (North Bristol).
Along with the BAE spitfire, one day i'll get a good shot of it!

Hi Johno, Welcome to the forum. These are some mighty nice photos of that Hercules. You were sitting on the ramp of another? I'm thinking you probably had some sort of leash attached to you to keep from falling out?

Thank god YES. It is a dispatches harness, like a belt, with a web strap attached to a karabiner style hook which is then hooked onto a steel cable running the length of the aircraft. It takes time to get used to and believe in!!

You did these with a 24-70?? are they cropped much??
If not.. he must have been close!! even though it is a big airplane...
Johno
30th of June 2005 (Thu), 16:02
close enough not to have to crop at all!

Thanks for your comments and indeed hours on a Herc trip can be mind numbing but I am able to sleep longer if I get on the rear ramp (CLOSED)!
The Herc is an ideal photo platform with bags of space and no perspex to shoot through - heaven. The 'J' is certainly a far better aircraft than our older K's if for nothing more than Air Con that works throughout the AC.

Johno, fantastic shots. We get Hurkies all the time in Aki, along with VC-10s and Tri-Stars. Only flown in a Hurkie once, from southern Oman to northern Oman, it was a 0100 flight and bloy did we sweat it out in there. I don't think I have ever been hotter.

Is that a new J Model Herc?
I have spent a few bum numbing hours in hercs. Boring as bat ****. Stood on the back door and watched SAS jump from 500 ft crazy buch them buggers. :o
Ex RAAF Avionics Tech on P3C's. They were good days.
Also spent a few years in the Army flying around in Blackhawks, Kiowas, Nomads AKA Widow Makers, Pilatus Porters (Great plane)
Thanks for the excellent shots.

These are indeed the `J` model and hopefully will be getting a few more soon. I would love to be able to take people onboard but rules are rules I'm afraid.
Have attached a shot from a recent trip all from the ramp of the Herc.
Comments, as always appreciated.

Very nice
Used to get Tornados and Hercs over Caithness a lot - doing training sortees from Lossiemouth.
The tornados were meant to keep above 500ft or something, but I'll swear some of them used to rattle overhead way lower than that....when we were out shooting on the moors they would spot us from a mile away, loop round and buzz us at a couple of hundred feet before heading out over the water
I remember one where we were at the coast, he came back round, flew straight overhead as he was slipping the wings back, and floored it and he must have gone supersonic not long after as he disappeared bloody quick :)
Must go back up there sometime and hang around Lossiemouth on the way - bound to be some good stuff there.

Steven,
To be honest I doubt they saw you, but its fun nevertheless. Lossie is a pretty busy place, lots in and out. And the approach is right over the beach.
