Just got a Rebel XT. Brand new. Took the first picture as a test. All ok. From then on it just doesn't want to take any picture whatsoever. In whichever mode I put it, manual, full auto, whichever lens I use (kit or 50mm/1.8), flash or no flash, firmware updated to 1.0.2 .. NOTHING

And by nothing I mean the attached image over and over again like a red noise. Am I that stupid and I am doing/I did something wrong or the camera is just gone and I should return it ?

Thanks a lot guys for any help. As you can imagine I am desperate :(

Did you format the CF card before taking any pictures? Have you formatted it in the camera?
Try formatting it in the camera and try again.

Just return it, don't try and fix it...take it back!

Thanks a lot guys !! I really did try beforehand all your suggestions. The only I didn't was with the CMOS battery. Did it and it was the same.

I did manage to find out something - if I was shooting on continuous mode - I would get the first photo like the crap I posted BUT all the following ones where ok. Moreover I did some shooting without any lenses in continuous mode and the camera got back to her senses for a little while. Yet after changing lenses it went back to red/magenta noise. I think there must have been some defect in the mechanism/sensor whatever and it doesn't move properly or it gets stuck or whatever.

ANYWAY I returned it to the seller and she promptly replaced it with another one. Now it's all fine and dandy - shooting like there's no tomorrow.

Thanks again and if anyone ever has a similar problem - just return the thing to the shop. There is no fixing. Case closed.

That test shot looks like the inside of a closed shutter. That's pretty serious.
