I really like the effort that these kids put into the game. Its obvious he doesn't have a multi-million dollar contract or he wouldn't do that in case he broke a nail or got a little grass stain on his uniform. Great capture and even better catch.

Wow, nice catch, both ball and picture!
I really like his expression, I wonder if a tighter crop from say his waist to just in front of the ball would be good?

Thanks all. I was using a fixed 300 f/4 about 1/1500 on a 20 D in AV mode.

That shot of the diving back to third was with a fixed 300mm with a 1.4 converter. Im zooming in around 700 + mm im out in left field on the third base line.

I should also add great patience. My daughters all play softball and I know how much patience ot takes to get a shot like these. Also, congratulations on having them published.
Great!!!

I agree that you need a lot of patience for this game. My daughter just started softball (3rd grade) and most of the time the kids are standing around w/ a finger up their noses or just goofing off. It's really hard to get a good action shot because they loose focus of the game.
I like the pictures above too. Nice work.

man.. looks like I started browsing thru here a bit late.. missed this 6 days ago.
I just went thru your best shots link... and I must say...
... those kids put a lot of honest emotion, a whole lot of energy, and lots of face muscle training into the game.
It is amazing to look at them, compared to the rest of the professional sports world.
from the ones on the other site.. all of which are great.. my favorite, or shall I say the one that speaks volumes, is the one where the boy gets nailed on the base (twelfth one down.)

I just looked at the link also and I can't really pick a favorite! They are all spectacular. Brings up a lot of emotions from 20 years ago when I was in Little League. The tackle at the plate after a home run...the jump over the catcher at the plate...the shear effort put into hitting!
Can't wait for my boys to get old enough to play...3 and 2 now. 2 years to go! :D

Hey myth337 what you mean by this comment (It is amazing to look at them, compared to the rest of the professional sports world.)?
Well, it just looks like these kids are really into the game, for the game's sake.
When I was in school, we played baseball in the morning before classes, during the first recess, after wolfing down our lunch, during the afternoon recess, and after school. (not to mention Saturdays.)
I remember playing like this!!
as to the point about the professioinal sports world, take european soccer for example. Everyone wants to be a star, and everyone concentrates more on looking good for the TV cameras, while trying to impress the Referee with their Swan Dives in an attempt to get a free shot, or to get their opponent thrown out of the game.
It has gotten so bad over the years that I rarely watch more than 5 minutes of a game, till someone pulls a "maradonna" (swan dive specialist), and then I switch to something else.
I don't want to use this thread to beat on the profi's, but it is cool to see innocent passion and emotion in young kids playing a cool sport. Like I said... I remember playing like this!!
... and your photographs capture the moment, and the emotion, so I say well done!!

oh.. and I forgot to mention... Baseball, either big guys or little guys, is pretty scarce over here in Germany... so I don't get much of a chance to see any of it.
