I was considering upgrading to the T2i... but seeing the 50D is over a year old and has no video abilities. Do you guys think the 50D will get an update by this summer? If that's the case and if it was in the $1,200 range I would consider getting it... depending on what sort of upgrades and features they add.

The 50D is most likely next in line for an upgrade. That being said, I'd concentrate on glass, rather than chasing the latest and greatest body.

Yep agree.

If you have a 500D but just have the 18-55 kit lens then your money has to be spent on glass.
I'd be looking for a 17-55 f2.8 IS and then 70-200 f4L if I were you.

The above would increase you picture quality and creativity far more than getting a new body.

Cheers
Lee

I want the video function with 24fps 1080p and Manual Video control. I know my lens sucks right now, but I'm not happy with the T1i's video functions... which is why I'm considering the T2i. So that got me looking at the 50D.

The 50d successor aka the 60d should be a mix between the 7d and the 550d. They'd be foolish not to add video and with mfa it might be a better option than the 550d. All of this is speculative though and we don't even know how the 550d will perform. I would imagine that the 60d would have a $400 price premium over the 550d so perhaps it's better to just get the 550d and use the $400 for better lenses. Since video is an important aspect you might want to sell your 500d now and hopefulyl for a couple hundred more you can upgrade to the 550d.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm not impressed with the current level of "user friendliness" in dslr video these days, and I see it as a novelty item to sell cameras for the most part. It works great for tripod shots, slow pans, and dof work, but overall it doesn't seem like a pleasant experience for anything that is moving, or that isn't a planned shot. A dedicated video cam is where it's at for me until this feature gets a bit more advanced.

Starting to see the vast array of recommendations you get with an original question like yours? ;) We all like answering this type of Q, its what participation on this forum is all about!

The thing that always sticks in my mind is - starting with the 450D / XSi at 12mp's - the reviewer on www.dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com) said - you need high quality lenses for this camera to make the most of the 12 megapixels...

Its successors (500D & now 550D) are 15mp & 18mp respectively.

I personally have no problems with the kit 18-55mm IS whatever - understanding its mainly limited to outdoor use due to its slow aperture (unless you have external lighting indoors). Otherwise - dpreview and other reviews state it has Very Good resolution to a surprising degree for a kit lens.

Ask yourself what kind of photography you want to develop at this point and then choose The Best Lens You Can Afford for the calibre of photo you are aspiring to.

I'm happy with my focal length range and quality, but my next purchase is the 17-55 f/2.8 IS so I can up the image quality and shoot more often indoors due to the wider aperture. Then the kit lens will be a very good back-up.

I got the 70-300mm because the 55mm max of the kit was too limiting for the type of shooting I enjoy. After I get the 17-55mm - time for a better (wider aperture) telephoto.

If you have the video bug, the 50D will not satisfy you. Build your lens armada. Just something to consider.

I wouldn't count on the arrival of the 60D. The x0D line may very well be dead.

Keep in mind it's been 18 months since the announcement of the 50D. A longer refresh cycle for the x0D is unheard of. If the 60D does not arrive by end of month, I say forget about it.

xxD line can't be dead. The theory goes that there's quite a price gap to be filled between the $800 Rebel and the $1700 7D. However, I'm not sure how a 60D can differentiate itself from the new T2I or the 7D now...

Product cycles are known to have been broken. 40D-50D was a surprising 12 month cycle, and there were people here who argued that there was no way that Canon would release a 50D 12 months afterwards, but hey, it happened.

Im also thinking there is gonna be no 60D. price gaps... nikon did it. 900 dollar d90 and 1700 dollar d300 just saying.

D90 is $1100 if you buy the kit, Nikon did something Canon probably will do if they release a 60D since the price between the D90 body only and D5000 are pretty darn close. The cheaper camera has a few more features than the more expensive one but people are spending more money for the second control wheel and AF motor.

I think you answered your own objection ;) I have no idea what Canon have planned, but it is quite conceivable that the X0D line may be consigned to history. Or they may wait until after the T2 and whatever sub 1D FF body is released to let loose a new one. Who knows!

and "Everything that could have been invented has been patented."

There is plenty more to be done, and it doesn't just have to be incremental steps. The xxD line has been the debut platform for several new Digic chips, and perhaps the Digic V just isn't quite ready yet (if that is what they're waiting for). Perhaps they'll incorporate an Eye-Fi card. Perhaps they'll give us eye control back. Perhaps they'll give us an electronic shutter like the 1D classic so we can sync up to 1/500. Perhaps...

I could go on and on. None of this technology is that far of a stretch, but it would provide plenty of differentiation between a 60D and T2i/7D in terms of features.

I can see a 60D with the feature set of the T2i and the ergonomics, build, and speed of the XXD line. Where does that leave the 7D? It still has the superior AF, 8 fps and flash controls to justify the higher price.
