I just want to say thanks to Dwight McCann, Steve Parr, and the rest who have offered critical advice.

I tried for a different look this time. A little sharper at times, a little grainier at others.

These are great pics! Nicely done, I really like the second.

Thanks, BB. Here is a similar pic you might like that I've posted before: http://plan-b.smugmug.com/photos/18406755-L.jpg

Oh, my goodness, I almost missed these ... is there a way I can know when certain people post? Anyway, these are terrific but the first one is stunning, the third an imitation of the first, and the last is also positively striking. I could not work in these conditions any more! :-) Wonderful, JK. BTW, is 'kawter2' your Dad? :-)

No, kawter2 is just a forum friend that spoofed my avatar. Below is a pic of my dad. Thanks for the compliments. I tried to vary it up, possibly making myself more marketable in the future. I still like my "soft and blurry" pics, but I am quite pleased the others. The last pic is my favorite of the bunch. I'll be posting more from that night soon. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of myself that night - I played too, see here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=81159). As far as keeping up to date on new posts, I usually send a PM after a few days if there is someone I want to know that I have posted. Sometimes I search for posts by specific members. I don't know of any automated way to get an alert.

Hey man, I really like these pics!
I particularly like #1 & #4.
I wish the lighting was something other than 'purple' in the first one, but I like the washed over look and that the hands united with guitar are the subject (IMO). And I like the emotion emitted by the last one.....though I think it would have worked in color as well? But all are very good!
What lens are you using on these shoots?

The first one is very good, the bright pink just really makes everything stand out.

Thanks everyone. Each show I document gets better and better. A few more of this band.

Oh, man. I really like this one too!
It's got that "70's rock" feel to it perfectly!!
It makes all the other 'sharp' ones seem boring......IMHO.

Well thanks! I am such a sucker for shots like this. If anyone is interested, there is a big Q&A discussion about live photography with Dwight McCann (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=81761&page=1&pp=20). I highly recommend you lurk there!

Just kidding, of course! You'll find Dwight very amicable and easy going. His down to earth, reasonable attitude makes him a role model for all forumers.

Well, your Dad would understand! I think he's only a few years younger than I am. I gotta go change clothes, grab my picture ID badge and camera cases, and head off to Lyle Lovett in about ten minutes. I'll be trying that 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens ... sure hope they jack up the lights on Lyle. I'll have images to share, here in Urban Life, over the weekend. Maybe I will try for some "soft" images tonight.
So, JF, can you find RockSlut and Reflection and get them involved with us? :-)

I'm a little humbled at being thanked, I guess only because I think I'm still at the point where I'm trying to figure this stuff out. Whatever it was that I said, I'm glad it helped.
That said, there's something about that first picture that I completely dig...

SteveI can't think of anything specific right now, mainly your willingness to share your pictures, and decribe how you made them. Some people seem to say things the right way, with the right enthusiasm, that you just listen, and hear them better.
