My next purchase is going to be the 70-200 f/4. It's a bit disappointing that the tripod collar is (a lot) extra. B&H in the States sell a white and a black version with the black being cheaper. Does anyone here know where the black collar can be obtained in Europe? I've tried several sites and cannot find it. I don't fancy importing from the States
as the postage is prohibitive (not to mention tax and excise duty). The Canon part number for the black ring is: 2888A002. Many thanks.

The black ring is the one specified for the EF 200mm f2.8L. Look around some photo Web sites to see if you can find it over there.

Good Luck.

hi john, i've had my 70-200 f/4L for a couple of years now and have never found the need to have a tripod collar for it. it's light enough to be used with the camera (10d) being attached to the tripod (even with the grip) as long as you have a good tripod head.

just my $0.02.

I suggest having a tripod ring. I found that the off-camera torque is always there when I shoot in portrait. Even I have screwed the camera tight, the lens and the camera tends to move downward in long exposure. A tripod ring can address this problem.
