I've just been using my 50D via a USB cable attached to my laptop.
Is there any way to do this via a wireless connection, i.e. USB reciever/transmitter?

Keith.

Is there any reason that you need to do this? If anything, I would recommend a card reader for faster transfers.

I've been using the 'Remote Live View' facility, where the camera was outside, connected to my indoor laptop, via a 2 metre USB cable. I controlled the camera via their software (EOS utility). I think the length of the USB cable made it unreliable, in so much as I had to reset it from time to time.
The USB connection at the camera end is a mini USB. I think the weight of the cable may be pulling on the connection.

Keith,

No real wireless solution unless you want to spend a lot of money on Canon's WiFi solution.

I've never had a problem with tethering a camera via USB, have you tried a different cable?

If you've got an iPhone (or iPod Touch) then dSLR Remote Pro may be your answer. I just tried it out yesterday and was quite impressed. You connect the camera to a laptop (or, in my case, a netbook) and connect the laptop to the iPhone via a WiFi connection. So you can leave the laptop/camera alone and control everything from the iPhone. As soon as we get some decent weather I'll be out trying to get UWA images of birds on the feeders.

^ lazer-jock posted the correct how-to for a wireless usb setup. $50 and minor DIY vs $400 for canon's equivalent.

Wow thanks for that mate, I wasn't aware this existed until now. Definately give it a crack soon as I reload some credit.

This guy Pete, refines the item and makes it smaller and neater. There's also detailed assembly instructions and photos.
