I've been looking to buy a "field" camera come spring and can't decide which to get. At first I was loooking at the olympus 8010 coming in march, then I saw a casio and the canon, etc. Any one have a waterproof/shockproof camera and can tell me real life experience? I appreciate it, thanks.

Someone else's?

Sorry - can't be more helpful, but I couldn't resist. My canoeing experience tells me I won't be taking my gear along anytime soon in something that size.

Good luck.

I have the olympus waterproof P&S (forgot which model, it's at home) which I got a year ago and as long as there's enough light, the IQ is surprisingly decent. Once it's gets darker, they noise is just unbearable though.

I still don't understand how it's waterproof! It has to have some amazing watertight sealant, but I don't see anything that impressive, yet it works wonderfully underwater!

From my understanding, the Canon version is the way to go as far as overall IQ. They essentially just built a permanent waterproof case around a standard camera. The other well-sorted camera in this group is the Casio G1 (which I've had a fair amount of good feedpack on from my customers).

I've heard bad things (IQ wise) about the Olympus and Fuji competitors.

Thanks for the replies everyone, can't wait to have a camera (and video) with me on the water!

I have had good success with the new Canon D10. I carry it in my life jacket pocket when kayaking on whitewater. The image stabilization works very well when shooting from the boat. The fast f/2.8 lens helps eliminate blurred photos by allowing faster shutter speeds. I have used several other cameras on the water (Pentax W60, G7 and SD500 in UW housings) and this one is by far the best. I have also used it underwater, snorkeling in Hawaii. Got lots of great photos there.

I don't know what they have coming or when. I would like to have a bit more zoom and RAW file capability.
