I inserted a non-empty CF card from my D30 which had the image names in the 9000s. I have since reformated the CF card and my new 20D images still carry file names in the 9000s. How to I reset it back to 0? I have the auto reset option turned on already...

I would try formatting the card, and turning the auto reset option on. Once it goes back to zero turn it back to incremental, or whatever the default is called.

Not sure if there is a way to reset it. I had just a 1GB, then got a 2GB card. Put the 2GB card in right out of the package and the camera picked up where my 1GB card left off.

So without resetting the image counter, there is no other internal way of keeping track of actuation on my 20D?

I wondered the exact same thing too!
The file numbers and folder numbers simply flowed over from my 300D.

Lol; I did the EXACT same thing when I went from my G2 to my Digireb; I almost freak out when downloading pictures and found my camera was in the 4000's (My g2 went around 9999 twice).
I know I was the first to open the package; and it took me about 10 minutes to figure it out.
I did the reset thing and it worked.

This is a completely untried, off the wall suggestion, but if you rename a file on the cf card and re-insert it into the camera, would it revert to that number?
I suppose that's if it takes the info from the card and not some internal memory on the camera.

The camera figures out what file number is next by comparing two things. One is the highest file number on the CF card, and one is the highest file number stored in internal memory. It picks the higher of those two and then picks the next number in series. Otherwise, you have to reset it.
If you completely format the CF card in the computer, then that number is lost. If you remove the button cell battery from the camera and leave it out for a while, then that number is lost as well. If you do both of these, then both numbers are lost and it will have to start numbering from one again.

Thats exactly what the post link I posted describes - but you have to set up the right directory naming too.
