First major event of the year for me last weekend, when I ventured out into the forests of North Yorkshire with GSH for the 2010 Proctor's Coaches Riponian Stages Rally. Always a great event, this year was no exception. Tricky conditions - some stages had deep mud, gravel, ice and snow along their length - made for some great action and very committed driving.

Anyhow, enough waffle and on to some pictures.

#1 Getting ready for the off

#2 Early on and conditions were tricky, with patchy ice and snow making for varying grip levels, and giving those on the right tyre a huge advantage.

#3 Some really flirted with disaster

#4 While some pushed a little too far......

We did manage to get him out - it's amazing what 15 blokes can do with a length of tow rope!

#5 Arriving at a right hander with full left hand lock applied is of course the only way to drive on a rally!

#6 Kevin Proctor was flying in his ex works Subaru WRC. Unfortunately he pushed a little too hard later on in the day and had to retire from the event.

#7 Trying to rip the rubber from the rims!

#8 Event winner Paul Bird and Kirsty Riddick in their ex works Ford Focus WRC.

A great way to start my 2010 season!

All of the shots were taken with a Canon 7D and a 200 f2.8 L mk II. There's a full gallery on my website (link below) for those that are interested: -

As usual, any comments, constructive criticism or feedback would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Simon.

I must stop tempting you with lenses....and cars....and pies :D

A lovely set Simon. The light was perfect for most of the day and it certainly shows in these.

Shouldn't #1 be called "Getting ready for the off...after an off" ? ;)

No need to cut down too much on the old temptation Geoff ;-p!

It was a great day, and you're right the light was bang on for pretty much the whole day. A grand start to the season - let's hope the rest of the season is as good!

Thanks Alan. I spent most of the afternoon running of the stage sat on my backside above the big ditch on the outside of J9 (the junction before the one where the speccy car park brought you out at). Were you the guy shooting with the Canon 70-200?

Cheers,

Simon.

Fantastic exposures and sharpness as always Simon and plenty of action to boot, cracking set of images.

Yes that’s me... just looking though my shoots and comparing your #7 with mine... nearly the exact same shoot but your colour and composition are far better.. New to this and didn’t think about track marking which is now coming out my roof…

Thanks Rhod :D

The Riponian is always an event that I look forward to, and when you're enjoying yourself it always shows through into your photos IMHO.

The background of the image is one of the first things I look at when picking a location. That arrow was why I got as low as I could for the afternoon run, as I wanted to use the car to hide it in the frame.
