View Full Version : An Updated Macro Lens FAQ?

I've been searching for an updated macro database comparing the various lens and price options out there for those needing macro-guidance.
I'm looking for something like this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=779256&postcount=2) linked in one of the main FAQ databases stickies. Definitely a good start....but I can't help but thinking it's a bit dated. Quite a bit has changed in the macro market since 2006.
I'm sure there are isolated bits and threads that would help over the past 2+ years, but it would be nice if they could be collated into one place.

Not really that much has changed. There is a replacement for the 100mm offering a red ring and IS, but that's about it. What are you leaning toward?

One thing I noticed was that the price gap between the Canon 60mm and Canon 100mm is a lot more than $40! ;) ;) ;) I was just curious if that changes the overall assessment of one over the other.
Basically, I'm trying to layout a wide range of options, so I can see about what lenses I should start renting.

Prices have changed. Your right there. To get a better idea of the prices (at least it's been recently updated) Check out the macro section of the lens table here.

That gets closer to what I was looking for, thanks!
I was hoping to find a thread/link/review from those who have actually used a plethora of macros, giving their general impressions/reviews of lenses in relation to other lenses. I've skimmed through about 40-50 threads so far based on searches, and it seems like most of the older ones cheer on the Canon 100mm non-L while the newer ones cheer on the Canon 100mm L! ;) ;) That's fine insofar as it goes....but it's not quite what I'm looking for. :D
I'm sure the information is probably in here somewhere....but it would be nice if there were a way to collate it into easier-to-find threads.

Pretty much with any macro you cant go wrong. They are all good lenses. You might want to check out this thread. It's been around for a while but still going.

Thanks. I was already set on renting the 60mm macro first, as I have a feeling it will do exactly what I want (something that can give me a 50/50 macro-portrait combo). The length seems about perfect for what I want. But I was just wanting to look over what other options I might consider in that general focal range for use on a crop body.
