Yes, it's yet another train shot. Can't stay away from them. 92 degrees and humid today, but I still had to go out and get a couple of shots down at the tracks.

Here she is - Union Pacific engine 3788 leading the parade of a load of new cars, headed southbound:

Thanks, Frank. Since Belmondo is on the road, somebody has to carry the railroad legacy. :)

I like the "tunnel of trees" effect,... nice shot!
Yes.. the forum needs at least one "Tom Wilsomething" posting trains at all times :)

I'm sitting in my hotel room looking out over the Sparks, NV, Union Pacific railroad yard. Amtrak just went buy (eastbound), and there are lots of trains out there.

Having established my perspective, I'm happy to report that none of them look as good as this shot, Tom. It must be the trees. (not a lot of them here)

Thanks, CDS & Belmondo...

Well, when I posted, I thought that you were to be disconnected from the world, Tom. :)

I had a series of 3 shots, and I would have loved to have posted the third as the engine started into the other turn, but there was this horrendous reflection of the sun on the engine's front window just as I fired the shot, resulting in a less-than-ideal shot.

This one worked pretty well, though. Still playing with the XT. And enjoying it!

I'll be sure to post a picture of a locomotive taken from the hotel window. Needless to say, I'm looking almost straight down on them. I gues it's not as bad as usual since they normally put us on the 25th floor.

Beautiful shot Tom. You were standing at the exact right spot, thanks for suffering through the heat and humidity to get that one for us. :) :) :)

Seeing it winding it's way through the trees gives this shot a great grass roots feel. :D

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif that's a beautiful shot Tom
love the trees in the background
it's certainly different because of them.
you would (I would ) think the train was coming right out of a forest.

Tom (Belmondo ) is your room cheaper because of the trundling trains making a lot of noise ?
and can you use neat image there ?

We're well above the trains. You wouldln't even now they were there unless you walked right over to the windo and looked almost straght down.

They make a heavenly sound, but I really can't hear them up here. Drat.

Thats a very nice shot, the trees have a cool "tunnel effect" to them.

Thanks, Marie. This is very close to home, but it's about 3/4 of a mile from the road. I ended up running (picture that) down the tracks to get to this spot before the train arrived. At 92 degrees and high humidity, that really wasn't the smartest thing to do - especially since I got there and had to wait 5 minutes for the train. :)

The window can be opened just far enough to poke a lens through. Unfortunately, that means it's wide enough for the cat to poke herself through, too, and that could no doubt lead to an unfortunate sequence of events that might easily find poor Dollie being splattered on the ground roughly 200 feet below us. I am reasonably sure that this would not sit well mith Mrs. Belmondo, so the windows stay closed.

you outran a train?

Well, not really. I read the track signal lights about 3 miles north, then sped off south in my car to the parking location and ran about 3/4 miles back north to the shooting spot (which I had scouted out in the past). The train and I were travelling opposite directions when I was running as he was southbound and I was making modest progress northbound.

On these tracks, when I see a green signal, it usually means that the train is less than 10 minutes away.

so the cat is having a holiday also http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
I guess it's the best way to take care of her
bringing her along

Dolly would look something like this if she got out through that opening

and life would go on as 'normal' like here in the photo

except for you and Lois http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif

and that you both enjoy the trip

take care Tom

you make it more interesting then the train itself
(almost)
3/4 of a mile is no joke ...running http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
and with a heavy camera
(wonder did anyone see you )
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I do the same ( in a smaller way)
when on a little hump backed bridge waiting for a train
I watch the red/green lights to see what's happening or going to happen
and on which side of the tracks it will happen
after taking the shot full on, running across the little bridge to see the train go under and out and off into the distance
( the bridge is about six feet wide..

We're getting down to extracting the more exact truth. My running is a lot closer to a jog. In fact, I walk at about 4 miles per hour. I jog at 6 (yes, I have measured, which is weird in itself). This was a 6.

Well thank you! There's always sport in even the most mundane of activities - even chasing trains.
