Off to a good start. I haven't even started yet, but even though I don't know what you're aiming to express I'll permit myself to give some constructive feedback.
The second shot is not very sharp, possibly the focus is slightly off, depth of field very shallow, or there is some camera shake. Sharpness is not essential, but it bothers some folks. There are some good colors but overall they are a bit dull. Don't know what could cause this, probably the lighting.
Again I haven't shot any macro yet and I don't know how much time you have to set up these shots, not much I suppose. However, the shots don't appeal to me, don't create any excitement or make me think of anything besides a fly and a bug. The objects simply sit in the middle of the frame. In short, the composition is boring.
Now that is a harsh criticism -- I am being brutally honest to try and help. The things I mention are not what I would expect from the very first shots trying your hand at something for the first time, but rather the kind of thing it might be worthwhile to work toward. In the end I am just some punk somewhere, and it shouldn't matter what I think. ;)
Keep at it, I'll bet they're ten times better than my first macro shots will be.

For first time shots I think they are excellent. Better than my first attempt!

Good first time shots, to improve the composition dont crop so tightly, leave more of the insects inviroment in the picture, and try not to keep them not so central with in the crop, but as i say very very good for a first time go at macro :-)

just a start what do you think? You are off to a great start! The most obvious observation that I would like to make is that the flash power should either be reduced or diffused to avoid blowing highlights and giving that obvious "I've been flashed" look. DOF is great though, and with a little work on saturation and sharpness in photoshop your're off to a great start!

Macro work is very tough, I think your pics are great, I agree that they may be cropped a little too much.
