I get the dreaded Err 01 with an old Sigma 18 f/3.5. I finally figured out it only happens when at anything other than wide open. Depth of field preview won't work because the lens won't stop down.

Is this repairable and if so, worth it?

Your lens probably needs to be rechipped. Sometimes rechipping is free, sometimes it's not (but still reasonable), and sometimes it can't be done. It depends upon the lens and just how old it is.

Contact the Sigma service center. They're very nice guys who will do their best for you.

You may have to send the lens in for evaluation. It that's the case, they'll evaluate the lens and contact you. They won't do any repairs without your permission first. If they can't help you, they'll say so. All you'll lose is the shipping charge one way.

Thank you very much. The lens is from the 90's and has been sitting unused for many years.

The 18 f/3.5 is a nice lens. If it's rechippable, it's definitely worth it. A good cleaning and lubrication is also a good idea for a lens that's been idle for years.

Sigma said they can't repair it because it's too old and they don't have parts for it. I'm very sad. I liked this lens and it's just what I need. But it's my third Sigma to bite the dust. Even so I may get the Sigma 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 for $80. It's all I can afford. I don't use it much, just like to have it for now and then. :(

I'm not a pro anymore so my stuff doesn't get abused.
