A wee story to, hopefully, encourage you to carry a camera with you everywhere.
A couple of years ago my wife asked me to drive her and a couple of work colleagues to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne for a business meeting. As this involves approx 3 1/2 hours each way I didn't want her driving that distance, so I agreed. As always, I took along a bag with some camera kit with the intention of getting a couple of shots as I killed some time.
As we left the car, one of the guys asked what was in the bag? When I told him it was just in case I saw something I wanted to shoot he laughed and said "Yeah, whatever"
A little later, as I wandered round the shopping centre I spotted a large queue outside a well-known book shop, so, being the nosey sod that I am, I asked the security guys what it was for? "Oh, Ross Kemp is launching his new book here this afternoon with a book signing session" When I enquired if anyone was taking photos for the store I was taken straight to the manageress, who, it turns out, had been trying to find someone with a digital camera all morning as she needed some PR shots for her company's head office. :D
Long-story short, we agreed that I would supply her with copies of all the shots I took of the event and I got to hand out business cards to the public in the hope of selling a few prints - result!
Well, you can imagine the look on my wife's colleagues face when they called after their meeting and I asked them to come to the store and they arrived to find I was still shooting and making money? By the time they arrived, the queue was still running out the door of the shop and the vast majority of people were asking for shots to be taken with Ross. I actually ran out of business cards and the store manageress got one of her staff to write my contact details on post-its for the customers (after this, I invested in a hi-vis vest with the details on the back to allow people to write them down if I am busy shooting - this really works well when I shoot mountain bike races as people often take a photo of the vest with their camera phone - and it doesn't take much room in the bag)
That wee afternoon made me approx. £350 from print sales!!! (not to mention the missus claiming my fuels costs back  )
Since then, I have made it a point to never leave home without a camera, even if it's just my G9 (and, funnily enough, my wife has never complained since about taking a camera bag with us wherever we go).

and, of course, I had to get a wee cheeky one taken with Ross at the end of the day:

The law of averages may well tilt in your favor if you are ready...cause trust me I could easily say the same thing;)

What's going on with the old guy in the back ground of your picture?

Awesome story BTW.

That's a good story. You never know when news will happen. Sometimes it just takes the right place at the right time. Honestly, I had to Google Ross Kemp.

I agree with ya. Had my camera in the truck last Friday night when I just happened to get to meet Frankie Valli. Ran back out to my truck, got my camera and got a fiend to take a picture of us.

Great story and proves why you always need to carry a camera with you

I've got a similar story to add to this lesson

We were with some friends one day who were in charge of a festival and asked if we wanted to meet Wayne Newton later in the afternoon.

He was the main headliner and they had backstage passes. I asked if I'd be able to bring my camera in and he said "Yeah, it shouldnt be a problem."

So we walk in and the manager of the local radio station grabs me saying their photographer never showed up. They had a line of people who had won back stage passes from a contest they had on the radio station and if I would take pictures of all the winners with Wayne, they would allow me to shoot the entire show up on the stage. Something that normally is never allowed.

It turned out to be an awesome show and Wayne Newton put on a great performance. The photos ran in a bunch of local newspapers and my wife and I got to meet him, hang out with him and had a fantastic time. All because of the power of the white lens...LOL

Excellent one mate!!! Am really pleased for you :D

And I really like the idea of the high visibility vest too....
It's not something I'd thought of, but could work wonders here as so many peeps are too shy to talk to me, being a "foreigner"!

Lucky you brought it.

Similar things have happened with me and opened up doors for shooting opportunities. I always have at least 1 body and lens on me at all times now

Another thing I forgot to add is keep the box of business cards in the truck of the car. This way if something like this happens, you can send the wife/friend/whomever out to grab another stack of cards

I always make sure each camera bag has a large stack of cards, and keep the whole box inthe center console of the truck incase we run out

Another thing I forgot to add is keep the box of business cards in the truck of the car. I do that, too. They can either sit in my office, or in the car. Where will they do me the most good? ;)

And FWIW, I also always have an extra 1GB card in my pocket & an extra key for the car. Guess why! :D

i got of a bit of a sob story that also proves this point.

i live in a town that was/is one of the train capitals in Ontario, and on my bike ride to work last summer at 6:30am i did not have a camera. on the way i see a train across a cow pasture silhouetted against the blue pre-morning sky with the sun not visible but with sufficient light to take a picture with a slow shutter speed if i had a camera and tripod and smoke billowing from the caboose! it was a perfect picture, and i was so mad i had no camera, not even a phone on me!

so now i carry something that can take pictures with me at all times, cuz you just never know!

And who is who in the picture of you and Ross? :D

lol - I was surprised how 'vertically challenged' he was (mind you he is an ex-Para - notoriously short-arses and I am ex- Scots Guards, so that may make the difference seem a bit more?)
Thanks for all the comments folks.
