Hello everyone,

I got my IR filter today and tried it out.It was very cloudy today but I think it came out ok considering it's my first one.I'm sure with lots of practice I'll learn to get them sharper and more contrasty.I'm going to try some more this weekend (wheather permitting).I'll post any good ones.here is the pic don't get your hopes up it kinda stinks http://www.pbase.com/g3er/infrared the picture on the right is post photoshop
Any tips on getiing better shots in IR would be nice.

Thanks
Astro

Astro:
You need to get rid of the magenta cast! Take a look at my G1-G3 IR comparison (other post and available on my web) or check out Don Ellis' wonderful G1 IR images to see what effect using the white balance has on "raw" IR images like yours.
You can even make them monochrome, like film-based IR images.

good luck,

Hey I want to learn what the benefits of IR filters are! Can someone gimmie some insight. Are IR filters suitable for the G3? I know they are, but I am wondering why they are listed as not for the G2.

Astro,

Are you using B&W mode?? My initial impression would be to shoot in B&W mode. I would think not with the magenta cast...I am considering this filter later on.

I'll answer the last two posts together:
First, I do not have a G2, but it appears from my tests of the G1 and the G3 that the G3 suffers the same problems as the G2 in the IR domain, without the "hot spot" effect. The test photos I published on my web certainly say to me that the G3 is less sensitive to IR radiation than the G1, and consequently any image in which non-IR light is heavily filtered looks soft and out of focus (as in my test images).
If Don Ellis had bought a G3 instead of a G2, he'd have still kept his G1!
Second, while it's possible to shoot IR in BW mode, why not have the option of getting those funky pastel greens like Don and I get by shooting in RGB then converting to BW in post-processing? I have even tried custom white balance in-camera with a grey and a white card, and got some really weird color balances in the leveled images.

fun...

I played around some more today with shutter speeds and ap setting s and got much better results.I also shot some in black+white which look preety cool but lack the other desirable colors that you get with color IR.This weekend I'll try shooting in RAW and see what kind of difference it makes.I updated the original post with the same picture but played around with it in photo shop to get rid of some of the magenta color.Check it out it looks alot better.

Gandini,
what's the short story on getting rid of that heavy magenta coloring? Is white balance the answer?I'll check out don ellis and try to get some answer there.I'm just really interested in getting some good IR pics out of my G3.

Thanks Astro

Yes! Just load it into PS as a magenta image and use manual levels. There's a white picker there, and start messing around. You get some weird and wonderful results.
If the image is made in RAW, you can custom select the white balance during conversion (in FVU and BB, don't know about ACR yet--just got it!) Again, just play around and see what comes up. If you check out Don Ellis' site, you'll find some truely wonderful IRs with that funky pastel green for the foliage. (There are some on my site, but fewer than on Don's)

That's about as short as I can get...!
cheers
