View Full Version : 1D will format only up to 1GB

While my 1D2 is under repair I am back to using a 1D. For some reason, however, the camera will not format more than 1GB out of my 4GB (Lexar 80xWA) or 2GB (Sandisk Ultra2) card.
Firmware of the camera is up to date (1.4.0), anybody suggestions?

Format the card in the computer and pay close attention to what type of format you use (FAT16, FAT32, etc.).

The 1D "Classic" uses a FAT 16 file system,. which is limited to 2GB
You should be able to get 2GB out of the 1D format then... even on the 4 GB card...

But 1GB is just odd?

On the other hand.. I did not have any cards larger than 1GB when I still had my 1D.. so I can not say other than in theory.. that it should give you a 2GB format... perhaps there is some other limitation in the camera other than FAT 16?

I'd try formatting both cards in the PC as Bob has suggested.. but format using FAT 16 and 32K clusters which will = a 2GB formatted partition. Then transfer to the 1D and see if that gives you the two GB

Well that sounded like a good idea but sadly enough it didn't work. The lexar won't even let itself be formatted in any other way than Fat32.
The formatted Sandisk (now FAT) is now even worse at 1.0GB, after reformatting it again in the camera it is back at 1.1GB.

I also tried formatting the cards properly in my 20D but that won't help either. The Sandisk will still only go to 1GB and the Lexar has to be reformatted in the camera instantly.

I'm not getting this!

What OS are you using Rutger?
I'm trying to figure out how we can change this 1GB partition on your 2GB card... :confused:

These format "rules" can be a pain. Windows XP is able to format FAT32 up to 32GB. If you format it to NTFS it can't be reversed to FAT32 but in Windows 98 :)

You could try using Partition Magic :) That allows you to almost do anything to disks ;) Helped me alot on my laptop but never tried it on a cf card :)

I'm using XP.

Also, I tried formatting using Partition Magic but as far as can tell it only looks at harddrives, I don't see my flashcard.

No pocket PC here. I'm afraid I'll be stuck to using 1GB for a while. No big deal, just some extra hassle. I'll get over it!

Rutger - did you try the advice from Lexar (see the link in Pekka's post) about using the Image Resue utility? It comes with Lexar cards.

Well, it was all easier than thought.

Although the camera says it "formats" up to 1GB, it actualy formats it as a 2Gb card. I was getting way to many shots on either card for a "1GB". When I started backing up the photo's onto my laptop it was giving me 2GB of shots per card.

Weird, but fine with me! Problem solved, me happy! :D :D :D
