from press release listed @ http://www.photo.net/canon/10D_preview.html :::

"The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens that is being announced simultaneously with the EOS 10D, but is compatible with all Canon cameras that use the company's proprietary EF lens mount. The new lens was developed as a more affordable alternative to the renowned EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens that has become a mainstay for professional photographers around the world. Featuring 3 aspherical surfaces and 1 UD glass element in a 13-element optical formula, the new 17-40mm lens delivers image quality equal to the 16-35mm lens. Like other current L-series models, the new 17-40mm lens is also built to professional standards in terms of build quality, with a metallic lens barrel and extensive gasketing for superb weather resistance. It will be available at authorized retailers in May with a suggested list price of $1,200."

(still a bit pricey, IMO... hopefully that'll drop.)

I was surprised at the lowness of the price - it's almost in my price range. Other UD lenses are several thousand $.

ok, my bad. I wasn't thinking list price. the 16-35's list price is $2400, yet you can get it for $1400.

I refrenced the $1200 MSRP of the 17-40 to the wrong number.

actually - I seen a guy not to long ago selling a 10D w/17-40L .. can it be that has had this combo since it came out???

Will you even pay more than $400 for a lens that old if he has had it since release day?

Haha, this thread cracks me up.
Just goes to show how dated our "new" equipment can get. I remember seeing a family member with a 10D that caught me off guard. That's when I had my XTi - I scoffed at the equipment then and hindsight I feel stupid for doing so. :(
Camera pride.

Vampire thread! Muahaha...

But for the record, I just sold my 10D last month and today I bought a 30D! I'm always a few years behind the curve.

I'm always a few years behind the curve.

But your wallet is probably in better shape than those who buy the latest and greatest with every product release.

Yeah.....around 6 years old, probably not even worth the time it would take ship it....it's amazing we could even take photos back then ;)

Well the 10D is still a nice camera. Mine lives and it is my back up now. For me it is worth more than a few bucks. I would not sell it.
