The common belief is that all good landscape shots are done in the first few hours after dawn or the last few hours before sunset. Obviously, that cuts out most of the day. So, do you guys even bother trying for a good landscape shot when the sun is high in the sky?

Oh I try. Frequently.
If the shot is any good I've always ended up saying, that is nice, think I'll come back earlier/later for another go...
The go back earlier or later and make a shot I want to print.
There are exceptions to the rule, but not often in the UK. Our exceptions usually involve the weather and precipitation/snow/frost...
(edited to say just before dawn is even better for landscapes)

Any picture with that so to speak wow factor imho has to be taken with the photographer facing towards the Sun, this gives an almost 3d effect, now when its high in the sky that effect is lost as the shadows are harsh, early morn or evening is perfect, not to harsh, in landscape breathtaking skys can be taken with ease at these times plus the shadows are falling towards you or at an angle to the lens giving a form and shape to structures, so i would only use high noon times if realy neccesary and would rather be patiant and wait till the light is just right

Photography is all about light and early morning or evening light is best.
That, however, does not stop me from trying during the day especially if there is a good stormy sky for instance.
Martin, that is a beautiful shot. The light is magical.

Slot canyons make for interesting landscape shots. Depending on the orientation of the canyon with respect to the sun, often the only time of the day to shoot is at high noon.

Inother exception to this "rule" (there are allways lots of exceptions ;) )
.. is Infra_red photography... High noon is just as good a time as any.. in fact it is much better then early am as far as I can tell so far. :)
