View Full Version : 420 EX Flash Problem

I bought the 420 EX for my G3 last week, and I immediately fell in love with the flash. Today, however, I was taking pictures on my lunch break, when I realized that the flash was going off in every picture, but the exposure of the pics looked as if the flash turned off. When I got back to my office I took pics in a dark corner, and sure enough the flash goes off.. but the pics remain dark. I've checked all the settings... and I'm confused as to what's happening. It's as if the timing between the camera and the flash is off by a bit. Any help you pro's can offer would be greatly appreciated, or I'll have to resort to taking the flash back to Ritz. Please advise...

You need to give more detail than "I've checked all the settings..." like what mode you were in. Have you tried flash in all the modes, have you tried both 1st and 2nd synch settings to see if it makes a difference. Based on just what you've said, without any more detail, I'd say take it back to Ritz, exchange it, and try out the new one before you leave the store.

BobbyLee.. I tried the flash in all shooting modes, and I also tried both the 1st and 2nd synch settings. I even tried using 2nd curtain flash to see if it would work, but to no avail. Thanks for your help. I guess if I take it back to Ritz, I will definitely buy some type of warranty for it. Luckily it stopped working shortly after I bought it. If anyone else has any suggestions for me and bill, please post...

I was set to *P* mode with the Raw setting enabled...it fired during the four pictures I took all the pictures from the same distance. However Only 1 appeared to have the flash sinked with the shot. Using a add on Flash is very new to me so it may just be my fault.........bill from Ohio

Give Canon a call and ask them. I think their number is 800-828-4040. At least they can ask all the right questions and tell you if it's broke or if you're doing something wrong.

Good luck,

Bill, do you want to get together? We can test your flash with my G3. Send me an email. BTW, I can show you some pics printed from my printer.

Ritz determined that the flash was defective, and they replace it for me. I went ahead and payed 50 bucks for a 2 year replacement plan. Thanks guys for trying to help me...

Glad to hear you got it resolved! Hopefully XXLT (Bill from Ohio) picks up on what you found out and gets a replacement for his 420EX.

Thanks Everyone for your concern...I checked the warranty and it is good for a year and I can just send the 420 EX to Canon along with the original receipt and pictures that show what problems I am having. (*Grin*) so all is well here. Thanks.......bill from Ohio
