in one of my books they talk about using these outdoors, are they good/bad? And better brands to buy?

Like any other filter, good ones are good. Lee is mentioned again and again as being one of the best, same with Singh-Ray.

I would get ND filters from a reputable filter brand.

As for different types, sure. They will be classified by how much light they decrease. Something like 2 stop, 4 stop, 8 stops, etc.

I have always used Tiffen filters. I use a couple of their ND filters. Sometimes they are a must for me when I am shooting when it is bright and humid out. But that is just my opinion.

There are ND (neutral density) filters, and there are GND (graduated neutral density filters). Both come in round, threaded versions or square/rectangular types. ND filters are used to reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor to extend shutter speeds, and GND's are used to balance the exposure between a dark foreground and bright sky.

Before dumping any money into filters (good ones will cost you), it'd be best to research them and determine just what it is that you're trying to accomplish. Here's a link that will help...read about the CPL, ND, and GND filters and skip over the rest:
