Does anyone know what the fancy chrome is on top of the engine? Just fancy air cleaners or something more?

Nice shot of a nice looking Merc, though I don't care much for his choice of hubcaps. Two Lakes pipes on one side is unusual, & I've never seen that air cleaner configuration anywhere. You should have asked him. Those guys have nothing better to do than to talk about their cars. It's what they live for! ;-)

It took a long time to get a shot, the car was usually surrounded by people. It was nearly 100 degrees F that day and I ran out of patience. Wanted to see the rest of the cars before I melted.

One thing I'm confused about - Is that a Cadillac emblem on the front of the firewall?

They are low profile air cleaners. Most of the time they are used when clearance is a problem. It looks like the engine could be an early ohv caddy. A common swap back in the day.

I Like the Lines on this baby.. and the color.. (hubcaps don't do much for me either.)
