I just did... My 77mm hoya HD CPL just split apart. Luckily, the company I got it from will replace it no problem. Just weird it happened...

Is this at all common?

For certain Hoya models, this phenomenon has been reported many times in this forum. I wouldn't say that its "common", but there have been many complaints about it.

Isn't the Hoya HD the one they showed on youtube where the guys smacking it against the table corner to show how tough it is? Sorry to hear you had problems.

Yup, that's the one.

Too bad it came apart on you like that.

Not personally but i've had many come back from 52mm to 77mm in Hoya's all split apart. Even had them split apart in the case right off of shipments.

Interesting. I wonder why the Hoya CPL's are not as durable as they should be.

I hope my replacement works out just fine. If this next one busts on me I am switching back to B+W. Never had an issue with my CPL from them.

I still love the Hoya HD protectors though... As long as nothing can seperate! :D

Then why'd you switch in the first place? :D Good luck with the replacement.

Well, because my original CPL was 67mm... I switched to lenses that require 77mm. So the B+W was MUCH more expensive then the Hoya counterparts, so I thought I would give them a try (I got them from max-saver) when I switched over to the 77mm CPL. I had received Hoya HD protector filters and really loved them, so I thought the CPL would be just as good of quality.

But it seems maybe not... Unless I had a dud.

Regardless, my replacement is on the way, free of charge. I have a 1-year warranty on this filter (the CPL I did NOT buy through max-saver, but a US store... All my other Hoya's through max-saver though). So if they keep breaking, I will keep getting replacements :D
